Guogou Douhua is a well-known tofu shop that has garnered praise from many customers all over Taiwan. Located in a remote residential area far from the center of Guogou, it may be off the beaten path, but locals (in-the-know) are aware of this traditional handmade tofu shop that serves authentic old-fashioned flavors. The owner, Chen Tianjin (born in 1943), was originally a farmer who cultivated a small piece of land and once ran a laundry. With few customers in the countryside, he switched to selling tofu to support his family after marriage. From grinding the beans to producing soft and fragrant tofu, everything is made by hand using traditional methods, ensuring quality ingredients and genuine flavors that have earned a solid reputation. Initially, Guogou Douhua offered only traditional and peanut (sweet potato) flavors. It wasn't until the second generation, with Chen Kunming (born in 1975), that two more flavors—mung bean and red bean—were added, each with its own unique characteristics. The peanut flavor uses Beigang sweet potatoes, allowing customers to enjoy whole, creamy pieces that dissolve in the mouth; the mung bean flavor features whole mung beans that remain soft and do not fall apart, providing a pleasant texture without any hard bits; while the red bean flavor also consists of whole red beans that are perfectly cooked, soft, and delicious.
