Bai Shui Lake is one of the famous salt fields in Dongshi Township. Although it is called "lake," there are actually no freshwater lakes in the area. The name Bai Shui Lake comes from the geographical features of the former salt production sites. The "Zhangxing Company," operated jointly by the Japanese and locals from Tainan, initially built a breakwater in this area, but after years of construction, it was not adequately completed. With the frequent arrival of typhoons, the outer coast of the breakwater often collapsed, causing seawater to flood the salt fields, leading to the appearance of white waves, hence the name "Bai Shui Lake." Currently, due to the mechanization policy implemented by Taiwan Salt Corporation in 1983, it has transformed into a tranquil traditional community. Over the years, land subsidence has caused the roads around Bai Shui Lake and Shou Island to submerge during high tides, leading many residents to leave due to the inconvenience. However, the mysterious yet slightly desolate beauty of the area, coupled with the breathtaking sunset sea views, has attracted more and more travelers, making Bai Shui Lake an emerging attraction along the coast of Chiayi.

Baishui Lake Introduction

Bai Shui Lake is one of the famous salt fields in Dongshi Township. Although named "lake," there are actually no freshwater lakes in the area. The name "Bai Shui Lake" derives from the geographical features of the old salt-making district. It was originally managed by a partnership between Japanese and Tainan locals under the "Zhangxing Company," which constructed a seawall in the area. However, the seawall was not satisfactorily completed after years of construction, leading to frequent damage from typhoons, with seawater flooding the salt fields and creating white waves, hence the name "Bai Shui Lake." Nowadays, after the Taiwan Salt Corporation implemented a mechanized harvesting policy in 1983, it has transformed into a tranquil traditional community. Due to years of land subsidence, the roads around Bai Shui Lake's Shou Island now flood during high tide, causing many residents to leave due to the inconvenience. Despite this, the area's mysterious and somewhat desolate beauty, combined with the breathtaking sunset and coastal views, has attracted an increasing number of tourists, allowing Bai Shui Lake to gradually become a rising attraction along the coast of Chiayi.
