Bai Shui Lake Introduction
Bai Shui Lake is one of the famous salt fields in Dongshi Township. Although it is named "lake," there are actually no freshwater lakes in this area. The name originates from the topographical features of the old salt-making area. The "Zhangxing Company," a partnership between the Japanese and Tainan locals, once built a sea embankment in this area, but despite years of construction, the embankment was never fully completed. Whenever a typhoon approached, the outer embankment would collapse, causing seawater to flood in, resulting in a scene of white waves in the salt field, thus giving rise to the name "Bai Shui Lake." Currently, due to Taiwan Salt Corporation's mechanization policy implemented in the 72nd year of the Republic of China, it has transitioned into a quiet traditional community. Due to years of land subsidence, the area around Bai Shui Lake and Shou Island now sees roads submerged during high tide, and many residents have left due to the inconvenience of living there. However, the mysterious and slightly desolate beauty of the area, combined with the stunning sunset ocean views, has attracted more and more tourists, gradually making Bai Shui Lake a rising attraction along the coast of Chiayi.
