Bai Shui Lake Introduction
Baishui Lake is one of the famous salt fields in Dongshi Township. Although it is named "lake," in fact, there are no freshwater lakes in this area. The name "Baishui Lake" comes from the geographical features of the old salt fields. The "Zhangxing Company," a partnership between the Japanese and locals from Tainan, once built a seawall in this area. However, after many years of construction, the seawall was not completed satisfactorily, and whenever a typhoon struck, the outer coast of the seawall would collapse, causing seawater to flood the salt fields and creating a scene of white waves, thus giving rise to the name "Baishui Lake." Currently, due to the mechanization policy implemented by Taiwan Salt Corporation in 1983, it has transformed into a tranquil traditional community. Due to years of land subsidence, the roads in the area around Baishui Lake and Shou Island now often submerge during high tide, leading many residents to leave due to inconvenience. However, the mysterious yet slightly desolate beauty of this place, along with the breathtaking seaside sunset views, has attracted more and more travelers, making Baishui Lake a rising tourist spot along the coast of Chiayi.
