Baishui Lake Introduction
Bai Shui Lake is one of the famous salt fields in Dongshi Township. Although named "lake," there are actually no freshwater lakes in the area. The name "Bai Shui Lake" derives from the geographical features of the old salt-making district. It was originally managed by a partnership between Japanese and Tainan locals under the "Zhangxing Company," which constructed a seawall in the area. However, the seawall was not satisfactorily completed after years of construction, leading to frequent damage from typhoons, with seawater flooding the salt fields and creating white waves, hence the name "Bai Shui Lake." Nowadays, after the Taiwan Salt Corporation implemented a mechanized harvesting policy in 1983, it has transformed into a tranquil traditional community. Due to years of land subsidence, the roads around Bai Shui Lake's Shou Island now flood during high tide, causing many residents to leave due to the inconvenience. Despite this, the area's mysterious and somewhat desolate beauty, combined with the breathtaking sunset and coastal views, has attracted an increasing number of tourists, allowing Bai Shui Lake to gradually become a rising attraction along the coast of Chiayi.
