Bai Shui Lake is one of the famous salt fields in Dongshi Township. Although it is called a "lake," there are actually no freshwater lakes in the area. The name "Bai Shui Lake" originates from the geographical conditions of the old salt-making district. It was initially managed by a partnership between Japanese and Tainan locals through the "Zhangxing Company," which built a seawall in this area. However, after years of construction, the seawall was not fully completed, and whenever a typhoon struck, the outer coast would collapse, resulting in seawater flooding the salt fields, creating the appearance of white waves, which led to the name "Bai Shui Lake." Currently, after Taiwan Salt Corporation implemented mechanization policies in 1983, it has transformed into a quiet traditional community. Due to long-term land subsidence, during high tide, the roads around Bai Shui Lake and Shou Island often sink underwater, causing many residents to leave due to inconvenience. However, the area's mysterious and somewhat desolate beauty, combined with the stunning sunset sea views, has attracted more and more travelers, making Bai Shui Lake an emerging tourist destination along the coastal region of Chiayi.

Bai Shui Lake Introduction

Bai Shui Lake is one of the famous salt fields in Dongshi Township. Although it is named "lake," there are actually no freshwater lakes in the area. The name "Bai Shui Lake" comes from the geographical features of the old salt pans. Originally, the "Zhangxing Company," which was operated by Japanese and Tainanese partners, constructed a seawall in this area. However, after years of construction, the seawall was not completed, and it often collapsed during typhoons, causing seawater to inundate the salt fields, creating a scene of white waves, hence the name "Bai Shui Lake." Currently, following the mechanization policy implemented by Taiwan Salt Corporation in 1983, the area has transformed into a tranquil traditional community. Due to years of land subsidence, during high tide, roads in the vicinity of Bai Shui Lake Island often sink underwater, and many residents have left due to the inconvenience of living there. Nevertheless, the mysterious yet slightly desolate beauty of the area, combined with the stunning sunset sea views, has attracted an increasing number of tourists, gradually making Bai Shui Lake a rising attraction along the Chiayi coast.
