Ming Hsiang Bakery Introduction
Ming Hsiang Bakery is a century-old bakery located in Xikou Township (since 1915), founded by Mr. Chen Tien-Song. The baking skills of Ming Hsiang Bakery were learned by Mr. Chen from a master craftsman in Xikou. One of the most representative pastries of Xikou Township is the "Niaozi Bing" (Bird Cake), which utilizes the skills learned to shape traditional Hakka "Sweet Potato Cake" into various forms (such as birds, fish, leaves, gourds, pipes, and water caltrops, etc.), thus it was also referred to as "Se Bing" (which means colorful cakes in Taiwanese). Each Niaozi Bing is handmade using century-old techniques inherited by the third-generation owner, Mr. Chen Kan-Yu. Once baked, the Niaozi Bing has a golden, crispy exterior and a solid filling. With the changing times, Ming Hsiang Bakery has also developed more flavors, currently offering five varieties including sweet potato, taro, red bean, mung bean paste, and matcha for customers to choose from. In addition to Niaozi Bing, the store's Dragon and Phoenix Cake and Miànchá (Sesame Tea) have also received recognition with the Golden Award, so when visiting Ming Hsiang, remember to bring back some Dragon and Phoenix Cake and Miànchá in addition to the Niaozi Bing to make the trip worthwhile!
