Mazu Stone Statue Introduction
Matsu is not only named after "Mazu," but since the completion of the world's tallest Mazu stone statue, it has become a must-visit new landmark for tourists. On October 25, 2009, the Tianhou Temple in Magang, Nangan Township, Matsu, held the annual "Mazu Ascension Festival," where local dignitaries officiated at the unveiling ceremony of the 29.6-meter Mazu stone statue, entirely made of granite. Many people may wonder why this statue is 29.6 meters high instead of a round 30 meters. There is a profound significance behind this height; it harmonizes perfectly with Matsu's total area of 29.6 square kilometers. The statue is composed of 365 pieces of granite, symbolizing peace every day of the year. It not only expresses gratitude for Mazu's filial piety when she saved her father and brothers from the sea but also reflects the devout faith of the Matsu people in Mazu. Furthermore, it symbolizes that Mazu will protect the people and land of Matsu for generations to come. Additionally, it serves as a robust promotion for the "Mazu in Matsu" tourism slogan emphasized by the Lienchiang County government. Moreover, the nearby Tianhou Temple houses the only Mazu spiritual site and worships a Mazu statue carried by the climber Li Xiaoshi, who conquered the world's highest peak, Mount Everest, making it a sight not to be missed.
