Mazu Stone Statue Introduction

Matsu is not only named after "Mazu," but since the completion of the world's tallest Mazu stone statue, it has become a must-visit new landmark in Matsu. On October 25, 2009, the Tianhou Temple in Magang, Nangan Township, Matsu held the annual "Mazu Ascension Ceremony," where local dignitaries performed the official unveiling ceremony for the Mazu statue, which stands at 29.6 meters, made entirely of granite. Many people may wonder why the statue is not exactly 30 meters tall but rather 29.6 meters. This height actually carries significant meaning. The 29.6 meters perfectly reflects Matsu's total area of 29.6 square kilometers. The stone statue is made up of 365 pieces of granite, symbolizing peace every day of the year. It not only expresses gratitude for Mazu's filial piety in saving her family by throwing herself into the sea but also reflects the devotion of the people of Matsu to Mazu. Furthermore, it symbolizes that Mazu will protect the land and its people for generations to come. Additionally, it supports the "Mazu in Matsu" tourism slogan emphasized by the Lienchiang County government, providing stronger marketing. Moreover, the Tianhou Temple near the Mazu stone statue houses the only Mazu spiritual site and also enshrines a statue of Mazu carried to the summit of Mount Everest by the famed climber Li Xiaoshi, making it a must-see.
