Mazu Stone God Statue Introduction
Matsu is not only named after "Mazu," but since the completion of the world's tallest Mazu stone statue, it has become a must-visit landmark for tourists in Matsu. On October 25, 2009, the Matsu Nan Gang Township Mazu Temple held the annual "Mazu Ascension Festival," where local dignitaries officiated the unveiling ceremony of the Mazu stone statue, which stands 29.6 meters tall and is entirely made of granite. Many people may wonder why the statue was built to a height of 29.6 meters, rather than rounding it to an even 30 meters. In fact, there is a significant meaning behind this. The height of 29.6 meters reflects the total area of Matsu, which is 29.6 square kilometers. The statue is composed of 365 granite blocks, symbolizing peace throughout the 365 days of the year. It expresses gratitude for Mazu's filial piety when she saved her father from drowning, reflects the devotion of the Matsu people to Mazu, and symbolizes that Mazu will protect the land and its people for generations. Additionally, it serves as a strong promotion for the "Mazu in Matsu" tourism slogan emphasized by the Lienchiang County government. Furthermore, nearby the Mazu stone statue, the Mazu Temple features the only Mazu spiritual site and houses a statue of Mazu carried by the mountaineer Li Xiaoshi from the world's highest peak, Mount Everest, which is also a must-see.
