Mazu Giant Statue Introduction
Standing on the coast is a stone statue of Mazu. On the right side of Tianhou Temple in Matsu, there is a giant statue of Mazu, which was completed in October 2009. In recent years, "Mazu in Matsu" has become the main marketing slogan for Matsu, and the construction of the giant Mazu statue took over 10 years from proposal to completion, representing the dedication and determination of the people of Matsu towards their faith in Mazu. The giant Mazu statue is primarily sculpted from 365 blocks of granite, symbolizing "365 days of peace," and stands majestically on a hillside near the coast, exuding a compassionate expression that is awe-inspiring. Surrounding the giant statue are twelve sculptures that tell the story of Mazu's ascension to immortality. The observation deck in front of the statue resembles a ship; from a distance, it appears as if Mazu is sailing on the sea in a ship, providing protection to the local residents. The height of the giant Mazu statue is 28.8 meters, originally corresponding to the total area of Matsu's four townships and five islands, which is 28.8 square kilometers. However, following the latest measurements, Matsu's actual area is 29.6 square kilometers; therefore, a lightning rod was added during construction, bringing the total height of the Mazu statue to 29.6 meters.
