Alishan Forest Railway Introduction

The Alishan Forest Railway was constructed during the Japanese colonial period to extract forest resources. The entire line is divided into the main line and branches, traversing three types of forest terrains: tropical, subtropical, and temperate. Starting from Chiayi Station at an elevation of 30 meters, it ascends to Alishan Station at an elevation of 2,216 meters. Additionally, travelers can take the Zhushan Line train in the early morning to reach Taiwan's highest railway station, Zhushan Station (2,451 meters), to admire the famous sunrise at Alishan. To overcome the challenging terrain, the Alishan Forest Railway employs four of the five major engineering methods used in mountain railways, including spiral routes, zigzag returns, Ω type turns, and specially designed steam locomotives. It integrates mountain railways, forest railways, and highland railways, demonstrating the capabilities of a world-class mountain railway, making it one of Taiwan’s potential World Heritage sites.
