Guanxi Shude Hospital Introduction
Shude Hospital is located on Zhongshan Road in Guanxi Township. It was designed by architect Song Jinsong and completed in 1936. This two-story building combines Japanese and Western architectural styles, being the first reinforced concrete building in the Guanxi area and an early landmark of the township. The overall walls of the hospital are coated with light yellow washed pebbles, crafted with detail, while the roof is covered with gray Japanese tiles. The facade features octagonal windows and columns, showcasing a simple yet stylish design of its era. Established in 1936, Shude Clinic has been well-preserved both inside and out through the Japanese colonial era and the Nationalist government period to the present day, continuing to operate its medical services. Known for Dr. Chen Yunfang's expertise, the clinic had a reputation in the region for treating various ailments including external, internal, pediatric, dermatological, measles, and diphtheria. Later, the descendants expanded the clinic into a hospital, continuing to provide medical care in Guanxi. Sitting in the consultation room, one can almost observe the historical development of medical advancements. Compared to the high-rises in urban areas, the modest two-story building with its gray tiled roof, light yellow pebble walls, octagonal windows, and columns is perhaps unassuming, yet it invites a closer look. Before the use of reinforced concrete, buildings were traditionally constructed with materials like iron, wood, and stone. The advent of reinforced concrete not only allowed for the construction of buildings that withstand wind and rain but also established a notable historical reputation for the area where Shude Clinic is located.
