Baguashan Buddha Scenic Area Introduction
The Baguashan Buddha is seated on Baguashan Mountain, gently gazing down upon Changhua with a compassionate expression. It has transcended religion to become an important landmark in Changhua County, attracting countless visitors and is a must-visit site in Changhua. The solemn and dignified statue of the Buddha was completed in 1961 and was once among the top ten popular tourist attractions in Taiwan. It has become part of hiking and graduation itineraries, with almost everyone from north to south having a commemorative photo taken with the Buddha, intertwining many memories and adding historical depth. The Baguashan Buddha Scenic Area has gradually formed over half a century; in addition to the majestic statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, there are also abundant recreational resources nearby. Upon entering the Buddha Scenic Area, the first thing one sees is an imposing archway leading to the "Buddha Pilgrimage Path." At the end of the stairs, it seems like a sky adorned with trees, while on both sides stand thirty-two stone statues of Guanyin, guiding one upward and calming the soul. As one walks further, a stunning 22-meter tall Shakyamuni Buddha seated on a lotus pedestal comes into view, evoking joy and admiration; the Buddha's grandeur was once the largest in Asia.
The Baguashan Buddha holds numerous legends, serving not only as a religious and tourism attraction but also inspiring many writers and filmmakers. It is an important cultural asset and totem of Changhua County. In 2001, the Executive Yuan's Council for Cultural Affairs held the "National Selection of the Most Distinctive Historical Buildings," ranking fifth in the list of the most distinctive historical buildings. In 2002, the Changhua County Government registered it as a "Historical Building." In 2024, the Changhua County Government overcame difficulties to complete renovation works, allowing the Buddha to shine again.
The area in front of the Great Buddha is planted with dense Bodhi trees, echoing the Buddha's enlightenment and awakening under the Bodhi tree. On the wall of the planting area, there is a large golden relief inscription that reads "Harmonize with Its Light, Share Its Dust," prompting deep contemplation of the compassion and aspirations contained within.
