Jihara Ai Introduction
Jilamida Tribe is located in Fengnan Village, Fuli Township, at the southernmost end of Hualien County. The residents primarily belong to the Amis tribe, and their traditional crop was dry rice. During the Qing Dynasty and the Japanese occupation, they came into contact with rice cultivation techniques. The rice grown here is of exceptional quality and was used as tribute rice for the emperor during the Japanese occupation. A small section of Fudong Road, which leads to Jihala'ai, is known as "Little Tianxiang" due to its canyon topography that resembles the scenery along the Central Cross-Island Highway. To the north of Jilamida Tribe is a settlement called Jihala'ai, where the paddy fields are situated at an altitude of approximately 300 to 500 meters. The ancestors cultivated terraced fields following the terrain, digging six irrigation channels to water the rice paddies. The tribe members continue to use the Amis labor exchange system to maintain the irrigation channels and the original landscape of the natural ecology. The harmonious interaction between humans and the environment not only led to Jihala'ai being registered as the "Jihala'ai Cultural Landscape Area" by the Hualien County Government in 2012 but also resulted in its selection as one of the "Top 100 Global Green Tourist Destinations" in the 2016 International Green Tourism Selection.
