Chishang Rice Box Cultural Story Museum Introduction
In the past, the train from Hualien to Taitung took 8 hours, which is why the earliest Chihshang bento was created for passengers to enjoy during the long journey. Initially, the bento was wrapped in bamboo leaves, containing four triangular rice balls with meat jerky and sour plums. Over time, it evolved into a wooden box packaging, featuring rice made from Chihshang rice, paired with braised pork, roasted meat, pickled vegetables made using traditional methods, and shrimp caught from Dapo Pond. With the passage of time, Chihshang bento has strictly controlled its raw materials, creating a richer and more diverse menu, continuing the legacy of the old brand through modern management. The Chihshang Bento Cultural Story Museum is divided into multiple exhibition areas, including the "Historical and Cultural Area," "Agricultural Tools Area," "Rice Culture Area," "Chihshang Bento Area," and "Traditional Bento Area," which introduce the development of Chihshang bento over the years through text and images. It also houses traditional stoves and utensils used in the early production of bento. Therefore, the Chihshang Bento Museum not only provides an opportunity for public visits but also serves multiple functions, including cultural preservation and education. At the Chihshang Bento Cultural Story Museum, apart from enjoying bento, there are plenty of other diverse activities to experience, making it a travel spot where you can spend a little time. Additionally, besides the spacious and comfortable dining area, visitors can also dine in a retired train carriage from Taiwan Railways in front of the museum, fully experiencing the nostalgic atmosphere of being on a train. Compared to eating Chihshang bento on a real train, it offers a more leisurely travel ambiance.
