Nanzhuang Old House Group Introduction
Nansiao, which was formerly part of the "Guiwei Port Community" along with Beiliao, developed agriculture due to its proximity to the inland after the two villages were established. In contrast, Beiliao near the sea focused on fishing. Although agriculture is not thriving in Penghu and many residents migrated from Nansiao in the early years, the village still retains many traditional houses built with coral stone. The distinguishing features include red tiles and stone walls, with types ranging from standalone houses, Sanheyuan (traditional courtyard houses), to compound buildings for large families. Among these historic houses, "Xu Fan Ancient House" stands out as the most representative. The Xu Fan Ancient House was built during the Qing Dynasty, approximately between 1851 and 1861. It features a layout known as "one courtyard with four columns," which includes a three-section main hall, two guest rooms symmetrically on the east and west, and a sky well. The main structure is also constructed with coral stone and has been well-preserved despite renovations. Due to its Taoist priest background and artistic value, it has been registered as a historical building by the Penghu County Cultural Affairs Bureau. In recent years, it has attracted many visitors, primarily because artists have used floating fishery gear as creative material to paint animal face patterns. Suspended in the alleys surrounded by coral stone buildings are thousands of colorful floating balls as installation art, creating a dazzling scene with the mottled shadows on the ground, making it a beloved tourist attraction.
