Walu Tribe Introduction
WALO is the old name of the Donghe area, meaning "bee" and "sugar" in the Saisiyat language. The local culture is rich and diverse, with the largest population being the Saisiyat people, who have integrated characteristics of Hakka and Atayal cultures while maintaining the uniqueness of their own culture. Mythical stories and ritual ceremonies are well preserved, and most reside in the Donghe community of Donghe Village. The Atayal people, with the smallest population, historically lived off hunting and settled in multiple villages such as Luchang, Luhu, Shibi, and Donghe due to the abundance of deer along the eastern bank of the Dadong River. The next largest group is the Hakka people, who are dispersed around Hengpingbei, Lu'ai Liao, and Donghe, centered around the worship site "Yongsheng Temple," and they once joined forces with the Saisiyat to resist Japanese rule. The WALO village currently refers to Donghe Village in Nanjiang Township, Miaoli County.
