Old Caoling Bicycle Tunnel Introduction

The famous Taiwanese folk song "Diu Diu Tong Zi" mentions a train tunnel, which is actually the "Old Caoling Tunnel," measuring 2,167 meters in length. Historically, it connected Fulong to Shicheng, and the slightly weathered red brick arched tunnel tells stories of the past. Above the northern entrance, there is a plaque reading "Zhi Tian Xian," indicating the treacherous terrain, while the plaque at the southern entrance, "Bai Yun Fei Chu," has remained visibly strong despite the passage of time. This "Iron Horse Tunnel" combines history, culture, and tourism, and experiencing its original appearance by cycling is the best way to enjoy it. A bicycle ride through the tunnel takes about 20 minutes, making it a simple and effortless experience! Since the Old Caoling Tunnel is right next to the New Caoling Tunnel, visitors can hear the rumble of trains passing by, making it a must-visit location for rail enthusiasts. The tunnel is warm in winter and cool in summer, while the railway tracks and hanging oil lantern shades on the floor evoke a strong sense of nostalgia, as if cycling through a time warp. It also crosses two counties—New Taipei City and Yilan County—so be sure to take a photo at the sign representing the county border for some fun! It is recommended to take the train to Fulong Station, where there are several bicycle rental shops nearby for an eco-friendly journey. Besides the Old Caoling Tunnel, you can also connect to the bike paths from Longmen to Yanliao and along the coastal route of Fulong, enjoying the leisurely atmosphere of the Fulong seaside resort town during your bike adventure.
