Northeast Coast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area Introduction
The Northeast Coast and Yilan Coast Scenic Area is located at the northeastern tip of Taiwan, stretching from Nanya Li in Ruifang District, New Taipei City in the north to the southern cape of Neipi Beach in Su'ao Township, Yilan County in the south. The coastline measures a total length of 102.5 kilometers, with a total area (including Guishan Island) of 17,421 hectares encompassing both marine and land areas. The Northeast Coast is characterized by its mountainous terrain adjacent to the sea, featuring jagged rocks, magnificent coastal erosion formations, fine golden beaches, and vibrant marine ecology, as well as a rich cultural and historical backdrop. It serves as a comprehensive tourist destination that combines educational aspects of nature with the emotional appeal of a seaside playground. The unique geography and climate of this area have cultivated a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna; to the north in the marine area is the East China Sea Shelf, while the Kuroshio Current flows to the east, providing a diverse and abundant fishery—making it an important fishing ground in Taiwan. The waters around Guishan Island and Nanfang'ao also offer valuable whale and dolphin tourism resources. The extended coastline has fostered a diverse and rich cultural heritage, including the charming stone houses in Miao'ao fishing village, the Dali Tian Gong Temple, and historical sites such as the "Tiger Stele" and "Xiong Town Man Smoke Inscription" along the Caoling Ancient Trail, as well as the inscriptions at the old Caoling Tunnel—"Controlling the Heavenly Pass" and "Where White Clouds Fly," and the San Diego Cape Lighthouse, all of which are treasured historical sites reflecting the pioneering spirit of ancestors and showcasing the beauty of humanities. The vast and clear marine waters of the Northeast Coast are popular for recreational activities during the summer, such as swimming, diving, windsurfing, surfing, and kayaking, which are well-loved by visitors. Additionally, visitors can combine these activities with explorations of unique ancient geological landscapes, enriching their travel experience. The area's rich diversity in cultural history, geology, and natural ecology is actively promoted by the management office, which organizes seasonal festive events such as the Fulong Welcoming Dawn, International Sand Sculpture Art Season, Northeast Coast Encounter and Caoling Ancient Trail Miscanthus Flower Season, among others.
