Northeast Coast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area Introduction
The Northeast Coast and Yilan Coast Scenic Area is located in the northeastern corner of Taiwan, extending from Nanya Li in Ruifang District, New Taipei City, to the southern cape of Neipi Beach in Su'ao Township, Yilan County. The coastline stretches a total of 102.5 kilometers, encompassing a total area of 17,421 hectares (including Guishan Island). The Northeast Coast is characterized by its close proximity to mountains and the sea, featuring numerous bays and capes, rugged stony cliffs, impressive coastal erosion formations, fine golden beaches, and vibrant marine ecosystems. It also nurtures a rich cultural heritage. This area serves as a comprehensive tourist destination, combining the intellectual function of a natural classroom with the emotional appeal of a seaside playground. The unique topography and climate of this region support a rich diversity of flora and fauna; to the north, the East China Sea shelf and to the east, the Kuroshio Current bring an abundance of fish species, making it an important fishing ground in Taiwan. In the waters around Guishan Island and Nanfang'ao, there are also valuable whale and dolphin tourism resources. The long coastline has fostered diverse and rich cultural elements, including the unique stone houses of Ma'ao fishing village, the Dali Tian Gong Temple, and historical monuments along the Caoling Old Road such as the "Tiger Character Tablet" and "Xiong Town Man Smoke Inscription," as well as the inscriptions at the entrance to the old Caoling Tunnel—"Control of Heaven's Danger" and "White Clouds Fly Here." The Sandiao Cape Lighthouse is another precious historical site that documents the pioneering spirit of our ancestors and showcases the beauty of culture. The vast and clear marine waters of the Northeast Coast are popular among tourists during summer for recreational activities such as swimming, diving, windsurfing, surfing, and kayaking. Visitors can also explore unique ancient geological landscapes, enriching their travel experience. The area's rich cultural history, diverse topography and geology, as well as its natural ecology, are complemented by seasonal festivals organized by the management office, such as the Fulong Sunrise Festival, International Sand Sculpture Art Season, Northeast Corner Cycling and Caoling Old Trail Silver Grass Season, among others.
