Northeast Coast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area Introduction
The Northeast Coast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area is located in the northeastern corner of Taiwan, starting from the southern cape of Nanya Village in Ruifang District, New Taipei City, and extending south to the Neipi Beach in Su'ao Township, Yilan County. The coastline measures 102.5 kilometers in length, with a total land and marine area (including Guishan Island) of 17,421 hectares. The Northeast Coast features rugged mountains by the sea, with bays and capes, steep cliffs of unusual rock formations, impressive coastal erosion features, fine golden sandy beaches, and a vibrant marine ecosystem. It is also home to simple yet rich cultural heritage, making it a comprehensive tourist destination that combines intellectual functions of nature’s classroom with the emotional charm of a seaside playground. The unique terrain and climate contribute to the area’s abundant flora and fauna; to the north lies the East China Sea shelf, and to the east, the Kuroshio Current passes through, supporting a diverse and rich variety of fish, establishing it as an important fishing ground in Taiwan. The waters around Guishan Island and Nan-Fang-Ao are particularly notable for their precious whale and dolphin tourism resources. The extensive coastline has also nurtured diverse and rich human culture, including the unique stone houses in Maao Fishing Village, Dali Tian Gong Temple, as well as the "Tiger Stone" and "Xiong Town Marble Tablet" along the Caoling Old Trail, and the inscriptions "Controlling Heavenly Pass" and "Where White Clouds Fly" at the old Caoling Tunnel entrance, alongside the Sandiao Cape Lighthouse— all invaluable historical sites that record the pioneering spirit of ancestors and showcase the beauty of human culture. The vast and clear marine waters of the Northeast Coast are popular for recreational activities during the summer, including swimming, diving, windsurfing, surfing, and kayaking, easily attracting visitors. These activities can be combined with visits to special ancient geological landscapes, enriching travel experiences. The area's rich and diverse cultural history, geological formations, and natural ecology are complemented by seasonal festive events organized by the management office, such as: Fulong Welcoming the Dawn, International Sand Sculpture Art Season, Cycling in Northeast Coast and Caoling Old Trail Silvergrass Season, among others.
