Northeast Coast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area Introduction
The Northeast Coast and Yilan Coast Scenic Area is located at the northeastern tip of Taiwan, extending from Nanya Li in Ruifang District, New Taipei City, to the southern cape of the Neipi Beach in Su'ao Township, Yilan County. The coastline stretches a total of 102.5 kilometers, with a total area of 17,421 hectares (including Guishan Island) covering both marine and terrestrial areas. The Northeast Coast features mountainous terrain next to the sea, with a series of bays and capes, rugged rocky cliffs, magnificent coastal erosion landscapes, fine golden sand beaches, and vibrant marine ecosystems. It also nurtures rich cultural and historical heritage, making it a comprehensive tourist destination that combines the intellectual function of a natural classroom with the emotional appeal of a seaside playground. The unique topography and climate of the area support a rich diversity of flora and fauna. The northern waters have the East China Sea continental shelf, while the Kuroshio Current flows from the east, resulting in a diverse and abundant fish population, making it an essential fishing ground in Taiwan. The waters around Guishan Island and Nanfang'ao are also home to valuable whale and dolphin tourism resources. The winding coastline has given rise to diverse and rich cultural heritage, including the unique stone houses in Ma'ao fishing village, Dali Tian Gong Temple, and historical monuments along the Caoling Old Trail such as the "Tiger Character Stele" and "Xiong Zhen Man Yan Inscription," as well as inscriptions at the entrance of the old Caoling Tunnel - "Control the Natural Barriers" and "Flying Clouds Here," and the Sandiao Cape Lighthouse. These precious historical sites document the pioneering spirit of early settlers and showcase the beauty of human culture. The vast and clear marine waters of the Northeast Coast are popular with tourists during the summer months for activities such as swimming, diving, windsurfing, surfing, and kayaking. Travelers can also combine these activities with visits to unique ancient geological landscapes, enriching their travel experience. The area's rich history, topography, geology, and natural ecology are diverse and abundant, and the management office organizes seasonal festivals, such as the Fulong Welcoming the Dawn, International Sand Sculpture Art Festival, and the Northeast Coast and Caoling Old Trail Miscanthus Season.
