New Chiayi Theater / Yuan Opera Troupe Introduction
Sinkagitso: Located on the second floor of Building K in the Cultural and Creative Industries Park in Chiayi City, Sinkagitso serves as a cultural transit station and creative incubator. The venue was formerly a sorghum liquor brewing facility and is housed in a historic building with over a century of history, originally part of the old Chiayi Distillery. In 2018, the Run Theater Company transformed it into a multifunctional performance venue, giving new life to the old building while carrying on the name "Chiayi Theatre"—the first theatre in Chiayi, established in 1909, which was an important cultural exchange space in the area. Sinkagitso aims to be a cultural platform for the community, serving not just as a performance space but also as a cultural base that connects the local area and nurtures creativity. The space is compact, offering a unique sense of "intimacy" that is particularly suitable for gatherings, performances, and workshops of 30 to 80 people, emphasizing close interaction between performers and audiences. In its operational philosophy, Sinkagitso centers around the "community" and develops along four main directions: "performances," "salon lectures," "courses," and "youth community base," with four main goals: strengthening local connections, establishing an art base, nurturing local talent, and increasing public engagement in the arts. It aspires to integrate the arts into everyday life through diverse activities, making it a part of residents' lives. In terms of content planning, Sinkagitso emphasizes "local artistic expression." In its "content," it incorporates the history, culture, and life experiences of Chiayi to resonate emotionally with the audience. In terms of "ethnicity," it encourages creators from southern Taiwan or those with a Chiayi background to participate and become cultural promoters. Additionally, Sinkagitso promotes Taiwanese drama, solo performances, all-age theatre education, international exchange, and interdisciplinary creation, ensuring that artistic activities encompass various age groups and diverse forms. It is not only a performance venue but also a co-learning platform that stimulates community participation and fosters cultural awareness and creativity. In summary, Sinkagitso is rooted in a historic site, blending cultural depth with creative energy, and is gradually developing into a significant cultural node in Chiayi City and an artistic incubation center in southern Taiwan.
