Shan Pond beside the Cultural Center Introduction
On this day in history – 【Shan Chi】 Taiwan's lumber distribution center – During the Japanese rule, due to the development of the Alishan lumber industry, the population of Chiayi City doubled and prospered rapidly, becoming a lumber distribution center in Taiwan. The current location of the Chiayi Cultural Center was once the site of the largest lumber pond in East Asia, created after the completion of the 【Shan Chi】 Alishan Railway, designated for the immersion and storage of wood, predominantly cypress, hence also known as cypress pond. Trees were planted around the pond, providing dense shade, as gentle breezes carried the scent of cypress, making it a perfect spot for fishing, akin to the joy of fishing at the Wei River. It truly is a leisure paradise. Today, the Chiayi City Cultural Affairs Bureau actively enriches various activities with arts and culture, aiming to inherit the literary style of Jiji and create a new culture in Chiayi, with the expectation of public participation in cultural construction, allowing everyone to enjoy performances and enhance the quality of life in the Chiayi area.
