Banciao Broadcasting Station, Legend Broadcasting Cultural and Creative Park Introduction

Banciao Broadcasting Station was built in 1930 by the engineer Kuriyama Toshiichi of the Japanese colonial government. Covering an area of 1.74 hectares, the historical site has a total area of 1,263 square meters. It features the most advanced structural design of its time, utilizing steel frames and reinforced concrete, with walls made of hollow reinforced concrete to maintain cool indoor temperatures through ventilation. The facade emphasizes horizontal lines and curves, reflecting the modernist style of late Japanese rule in Taiwan, and it is one of the five major broadcasting facilities. After World War II, it was taken over by the China Broadcasting Corporation. It fell into disrepair and faced demolition but was preserved through local advocacy. In 2015, the New Taipei City Government designated it as a city historical site, and in 2019, the outdoor park was completed and opened for public leisure. In 2022, restoration and reuse of the historical structure were completed. The Contemporary Legend Theatre Cultural and Arts Foundation obtained a 15-year operating right (2022-2037), led by artistic director Wu Hsing-kuo, overseeing the Contemporary Legend Theatre, Youth Theatre of Legend, Taiko Dance Troupe, and Little Legend Theatre, aiming to promote the legacy of performing arts and sustainable development. The 5,500-ping park features four main themed venues: the Drama Hall, Dance Hall, Literature Hall, and Exhibition Hall, providing diverse performance and activity spaces. An international arts festival will be held annually from July to September, gathering contemporary performing arts, family interaction, and experiences of aesthetic living, making it a popular destination for art enthusiasts and local residents. Banciao Broadcasting Station will become the first case of a private arts and cultural group operating a historical site in New Taipei City, establishing a base for cultural legacy and innovative professional performance venues.
