Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum Introduction
The Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum is the only public museum in Taiwan dedicated to wood carving. It was opened on April 9, 1995, focusing on the collection and exhibition of both local and international wood carving art pieces. In May 2003, the museum completed an expansion of its second building, which added spaces for wood carving education, exhibitions, collections, and a library. The unique architectural design won the first prize in Taiwanese architecture that year. With its rich collections and facilities, the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum officially entered a new era, becoming an international professional museum dedicated to wood carving. The exhibition spaces of the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum include the first building’s first and second floors, the basement, and the second building’s second, third, and fourth floors. The exhibition themes encompass nine sections, including the origins of carving art, the evolution of Chinese sculpture, wood carving of Austronesian peoples, the history of Sanyi wood carving, architectural furniture, religious temple artifacts, multimedia, contemporary art invited exhibitions, and special exhibitions on wood carving art. These exhibits meticulously present the beauty of wood carving, allowing visitors to have a complete and perfect experience regarding the application and artistry of wood carving. The second floor showcases the flourishing Sanyi wood carving industry and exhibits wood carvings encountered in daily life, such as architecture, furniture, and carving tools. The exquisite wood carvings in the temple deity section fully convey the devotion of Chinese folk beliefs. In addition to exhibiting permanent collections, the museum regularly holds solo exhibitions of wood carving masters' works and lectures by experts and scholars every month. It also arranges live demonstrations by carving masters, workshops, and DIY wood carving activities, allowing visitors to personally participate in wood carving and experience the joy of this craft, bringing them closer to the life and art of wood carving.
