San Yi Wood Sculpture Museum Introduction
The Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum is the only public museum in Taiwan dedicated to wood carving, which opened on April 9, 1995. Its main focus is on collecting and displaying both local and international wood carving artworks. In May 2003, the museum completed the expansion of its second building, creating new spaces for wood carving education, exhibitions, collections, and a library. The unique architectural design won the first prize in Taiwan's architectural awards that year. With its rich collections and facilities, the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum has officially entered a new era, becoming an international professional museum of wood sculpture. The exhibition spaces include the first and second floors, basement, and the second building's second to fourth floors. The thematic exhibitions cover nine parts, including the origins of carving art, the styles of Chinese sculptures through the ages, wood carving of Austronesian peoples, the development of Sanyi wood carving, architectural furniture, religious temple statues, mixed media and contemporary art invitations, and special exhibitions on wood carving art. These exhibits meticulously present the beauty of wood carving, providing visitors with a complete and enriching experience of the art form. The second floor showcases Taiwan's thriving Sanyi wood carving industry, presenting wood carvings encountered in daily life, such as architecture, furniture, and carving tools. The exquisite wood carvings in the temple statue area convey the devotion of Chinese folk beliefs. In addition to exhibiting the museum's collection, the museum regularly hosts solo exhibitions by wood carving masters and lectures by experts and scholars. It also arranges live demonstrations by carving masters, workshops, and DIY wood carving activities, allowing visitors to personally engage in wood carving, experience the joy of the craft, and gain a closer connection to the art and lifestyle of wood carving.
