Shuimei Woodcarving Street Introduction
The streets of Sanyi are centered along Zhongzheng Road, lined with numerous carving shops. Almost half of the local residents make a living from wood carving, with the main wood sourced from Daxueshan, Alishan, Fengyuan, Zhushan, and Zhudong, primarily using camphor wood, as well as cypress and sandalwood. The most distinctive aspect of Sanyi's carving is that the craftsmen are skilled at teaching according to the material, often utilizing many large wood prototypes for carving or creating vibrant, natural works, giving them new life. Currently, Sanyi wood carvings are distributed around Shuimei, accessible from the Sanyi interchange on the highway, and along Provincial Highway 3 for about 1 kilometer. There are over 200 art shops concentrated in this area, some of which have production factories at the back of the shops. This geographical advantage attracts many buyers and has become the main trading location for Sanyi wood carvings. Walking along Shuimei Street, whether it is the rugged Daruma, the solemn Guanyin, or the vividly lifelike small animals, all are a feast for the eyes.
