Shuimei Wood Carving Street Introduction
The streets of Sanyi center around Zhongzheng Road, flanked by numerous carving shops, with nearly half of the residents engaged in the wood carving industry. The primary woods used come from Dasyueshan, Ali Mountain, Fengyuan, Zhushan, and Zhudong, with camphor wood being predominant, along with cypress and sandalwood. What makes Sanyi carving unique is the masters' ability to teach according to the material, often using the natural shapes of large woods to create vivid and lively works that breathe new life. Currently, Sanyi wood carvings can be found in Shuimei, accessible via the Sanyi interchange on the freeway, and along Provincial Highway No. 3 for about 1 kilometer, where over 200 art shops are concentrated. Some of these shops have manufacturing factories behind them, benefiting from the geographic location that attracts many buyers and becoming the main trading hub for Sanyi wood carvings. Walking along Shuimei Street, one is captivated by the rugged Daruma, the solemn Guanyin, and the lifelike little animals, all of which are astonishingly captivating.
