Shuimei Wood Carving Street Introduction
The main street of Sanyi is Zhongzheng Road, lined with numerous carving shops. Almost half of the local residents make a living from the wood carving industry, primarily using wood sourced from Daxueshan, Alishan, Fengyuan, Zhushan, and Zhudong, with camphor wood as the main material, as well as cypress and sandalwood. The most distinctive feature of Sanyi carving is the masters' skill in teaching according to the materials, often using large wooden prototypes to create vivid and natural works, giving them new life. Currently, Sanyi wood carvings are concentrated in Shueimei, accessible from the Sanyi interchange on the highway, and a 1-kilometer stretch along Provincial Highway No. 3, where over 200 art shops are located. Some of these shops have production factories at the back, bringing in many buyers due to the geographical advantage, making it the main trading place for Sanyi wood carvings. Walking along Shueimei Street, one can see a variety of captivating works, from rugged Bodhidharma statues and majestic Guanyin figures to lifelike small animals.
