Shuimei Woodcarving Street Introduction
The streets of Sanyi are primarily along Zhongzheng Road, lined with numerous carving shops. Almost half of the local residents rely on the wood carving industry for their livelihood, with the main materials sourced from Daxueshan, Alishan, Fengyuan, Zhushan, and Zhudong, primarily using camphor wood, as well as cypress and sandalwood. The most unique aspect of Sanyi carving is that the masters are skilled at teaching according to the material, often using many giant wood prototypes or creating lively, natural works that give new life to the wood. Currently, Sanyi wood carvings are distributed around Shuimei, accessible via the Sanyi interchange from the highway, along Provincial Highway No. 3 for about 1 kilometer. There are over 200 artisan shops concentrated in this area, with some featuring production factories located behind the shops. This geographical advantage brings in many buyers, making it a major trading location for Sanyi wood carvings. Walking along Shuimei Street, whether it’s the rugged Bodhidharma, the solemn Guanyin, or the lifelike small animals, there is an overwhelming array of sights to behold.
