Shuimei Wood Sculpture Street Introduction
The streets of Sanyi are mainly centered around Zhongzheng Road, lined with numerous sculpture shops. Almost half of the local residents earn their living from the wood carving industry, with the primary materials sourced from Daxueshan, Alishan, Fengyuan, Zhushan, and Zhudong, predominantly using camphor wood, as well as cypress and sandalwood. What makes Sanyi carving particularly unique is the masters' skill in tailoring their techniques to the materials, often using large wood prototypes or creating vibrant and lifelike works, giving them a new lease on life. Currently, Sanyi wood carvings are concentrated around the Shueimei area, accessible from the Sanyi interchange on the highway, with a one-kilometer journey along Provincial Highway 3. More than 200 art shops are located here, some of which have production factories behind the shops. The geographic convenience attracts many buyers and has become a key trading hub for Sanyi wood carvings. Walking along Shueimei Street, whether encountering the rugged Daruma, the solemn Guanyin, or the lifelike small animals, is truly a feast for the eyes.
