Chuanming Ecological Education Silkworm Farm Introduction
In Miaoli, in a tranquil corner of the Shitan Valley, there was originally a rice paddy terrace. In the late 1970s, due to government initiatives, mulberry trees were planted, fostering the cultivation of plump silkworms and the beginning of a professional sericulture life. Initially producing round cocoons and then transitioning to flat cocoons, by the 1990s, changes in government agricultural policy led to the abolishment of the sericulture industry, and no one was purchasing silk anymore. Looking at the vast green mulberry fields and the uncertain future, the farm owner insisted on preserving this precious historical industry in Taiwan, allowing children in Taiwan to see the lovely silkworms. Thus, the "Quanming Ecological Education Sericulture Farm" was established. In this pesticide-free ecological mulberry garden, thousands of silkworms are raised. Visitors can watch the silkworms eat mulberry leaves, grow, spin silk, pupate, and eventually emerge as moths. In the courtyard, cute insects and small animals can be seen fluttering and running around, and when night falls, fireflies accompany us. With some luck, one might even spot a big bombyx mori! With over 20 years of experience in sericulture, Quanming is currently the only professional silkworm farm in Taiwan and is designated as a demonstration teaching point by the Miaoli County Government. From the basics of mulberry leaf planting and silkworm breeding to allowing visitors to participate in the handmade production process of flat silk quilts, the farm provides professional, lively, and easily understandable guided tours, enabling the public to gain an in-depth understanding of silkworm ecology and experience the wonderful world of silkworms.
