Chuanming Ecological Education Sericulture Farm Introduction
In Miaoli, in a quiet corner of the Shitan Valley, there used to be terraced rice fields. In the late 1970s, due to government promotion, mulberry trees were planted, nurturing fluffy silkworms and starting the life of a professional sericulturist. Initially focusing on round cocoon production, they later transitioned to flat cocoon production. However, by the 1990s, with changes in government agricultural policy, the silkworm industry was abolished, and there were no buyers for silk. Looking at the vast green mulberry fields and an uncertain future, the farm owner insisted on preserving this precious historical industry in Taiwan, so that children in Taiwan could see adorable silkworms, and thus "Quanming Ecological Education Sericulture Farm" was established. In this pesticide-free ecological mulberry garden, thousands of silkworms are raised. Visitors can observe the silkworms eating mulberry leaves, growing up, spinning silk, pupating, and eventually metamorphosing into moths. In the yard, cute insects and small animals can be seen fluttering and running around, and at night, fireflies accompany us. If lucky, one might also spot the large wild silkworm! Quanming, with over 20 years of sericulture experience, is currently the only professional silkworm farm in Taiwan and is designated as a demonstration teaching site by the Miaoli County government. From the basics of mulberry leaf cultivation and silkworm raising to allowing visitors to participate in the making process of flat handmade silk quilts, the farm provides professional, lively, and easy-to-understand guided tours, giving the public an in-depth understanding of sericulture ecology and leading them to experience the wonderful world of silkworms.
