Lukang Ri Mao Hang Introduction
During the Jiaqing period, Lugang had eight trade associations, referred to as "jiao," which are akin to today's commercial guilds. The Ri Mao Hang, also known as "Ri Miao," was the largest trading firm among the trade associations in Lugang and was the wealthiest in Lugang from the Qianlong period until the 20th year of the Daoguang period (1840). The Lin family of Ri Mao Hang was the foremost among the eight associations, known for their charitable deeds. In the 42nd year of Qianlong (1777), they donated funds to establish the Lugang charitable organization "Jingyi Garden," which engaged in various charitable works such as collecting abandoned bodies, building memorial graves, and repairing bridges, benefiting the local community and becoming the largest charitable organization of its time. Additionally, Ri Mao Hang participated in local affairs such as the relocation of the Longshan Temple in the 51st year of Qianlong (1786) and the construction of the Tianhou Temple (now known as the New Ancestor Temple) in the 52nd year of Qianlong (1787). The contributions and achievements of Ri Mao Hang to Lugang are still sung in praise in the town today.
