Lukang Rihmou Shop Introduction
During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, Lugang already had eight commercial guilds, referred to as "jiao," which are akin to modern commercial associations. The Ri Mao Xing, also known as "Ri Miao," was the largest commercial establishment among the eight guilds and was the richest in Lugang from the Qianlong period to the 20th year of Daoguang (1840). The Lin family of Ri Mao Xing led the eight guilds, known for their charity work. In the 42nd year of Qianlong (1777), they donated funds to establish the Lugang charitable organization "Jing Yi Yuan," which focused on tasks such as collecting scraps of paper, setting up义塚, recovering remains, and repairing bridges, benefiting the community and becoming the largest charitable organization of its time. Additionally, Ri Mao Xing participated in local affairs such as the relocation of the Longshan Temple in Lugang in the 51st year of Qianlong (1786) and the construction of the Tianhou Temple (now Xinzumiao) in the 52nd year of Qianlong (1787). The contributions and deeds of Ri Mao Xing in Lugang are still celebrated and passed down to this day.
