Taiwan Craft Workshop - Shih Tzu-Ho Art Studio Introduction
Craftsman: Shih Chih-Hui Shih Chih-Hui was born in Lukang in 1935. He began learning deity statue carving and decorating from his father, Shih Li, who is renowned as the "Divine Knife," at the age of 16. He has been dedicated to studying carving and the art of decorating deities for over seventy years. Shih specializes in the Quanzhou school's technique of decorating deity sculptures, which features a structural framework, layout, proportion, an elegant and intricate style, as well as a stable and solid workmanship with exquisite and luxurious lacquer lines, earning him remarkable skills. In 2014, he received the "Craft Achievement Award" from the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute, and the "2014 Taiwan Wood Carving Heritage Award" from the Miaoli County Government. He was honored in 2011 by the Council for Cultural Affairs as a National Living Treasure, registered as part of the intangible cultural heritage/traditional crafts—deity decoration preservation by the Changhua County Government in 2009, and the 10th "National Arts Heritage Award" from the Ministry of Education in 1994, among other accolades. Shih's art workshop is located near the Lukang Tianhou Temple, Lukang Old Street, and the Arts and Cultural Center.
