Taiwan Craft Workshop - Shih Tzu-He Art Studio Introduction
Artist: Shih Chi-hui Shih Chi-hui was born in 1935 in Lukang. Starting from the age of 16, he learned the art of deity statue carving and decorating from his father, Shih Li, who is renowned as the "Divine Knife." He has solidified his foundational skills and devoted himself to the study of carving and the craft of decorating statues for over seventy years. The Quanzhou school of decorative statue carving techniques—characterized by a framework structure, composition, proportion, delicate elegance, stability, solidity, and exquisite and luxurious lacquer line techniques—are all skillfully integrated into his work, making his artistry truly unique. In 2014, he received the "Craft Achievement Award" from the Ministry of Culture's National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute and the "2014 Taiwan Wood Carving Heritage Award" from the Miaoli County Government. In 2011, he was recognized as a Living National Treasure by the Council for Cultural Affairs, and in 2009, he was listed as an intangible cultural asset/traditional craft—preserver of decorative statue carving by the Changhua County Government. He also received the 10th "National Arts Heritage Award" from the Ministry of Education in 1994, among other honors. Shih's art workshop is located near the Tianhou Temple, Lukang Old Street, and the Cultural and Creative Industries Park in Lukang.
