The Lukang Folk Arts Museum was originally the ancestral home of the Guo family, a prominent family in early Taiwan. To preserve the traditional culture of Lukang and following the philosophy of "taking from society and giving back to society," the Guo family donated the land, buildings, furniture, utensils, and collectibles of their ancestral home in 1973, while establishing a foundation to manage the site in the long term, making it a cultural exhibition hall with local characteristics.
The museum is divided into two buildings: one is the "Gufeng Building," a traditional Minnan-style building with a history of two hundred years, and the other is a nearly one-hundred-year-old Baroque-style building from the late Renaissance period known as the "Western Building." The collections in the museum amount to over six thousand items, primarily consisting of folk artifacts from the mid-Qing dynasty to the early Republic of China. Exhibitions include folk items related to food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, entertainment, religious customs, and festive celebrations, showcasing the rich Minnan folk culture.
The Gufeng Building is an 18th-century brick and wood structure, displaying traditional Minnan architectural features. It exudes an ancient charm, reflecting the essence of deep courtyards, and serves as a great place to appreciate the traditional Minnan courtyard houses.
