Lukang Folk Arts Museum was originally the ancestral home of the prominent Gu family in Taiwan. In order to preserve the traditional culture of Lukang and based on the principle of "taking from society, giving back to society," the Gu family donated the land, buildings, furniture, utensils, and collections of their ancestral home in the 62nd year of the Republic of China. They also established a foundation to manage and operate the museum long-term, making it a distinctive cultural display venue.
The museum consists of two buildings, including a traditional Minnan-style building called "Gu Feng Lou," which is over 200 years old, and a Baroque-style building from the later Renaissance period called "Yang Lou," which is nearly 100 years old. The museum's collection comprises over 6,000 items, primarily focusing on folk artifacts from the mid-Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China. It displays various aspects of daily life, including food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, entertainment, religious ceremonies, and festive celebrations, showcasing the richness of folk culture.
Gu Feng Lou, the Minnan-style building, is an 18th-century brick and wooden structure, exemplifying traditional Minnan architectural features. Its historical charm radiates from the deep courtyard, making it a wonderful place to appreciate the essence of traditional Minnan mansions.
