Lukang Folk Arts Museum was originally the ancestral home of the prominent Gu family, led by Gu Xianrong, in early Taiwan. In order to preserve the traditional culture of Lukang and embody the concept of "taking from society, giving back to society," the Gu family donated the land, buildings, furniture, utensils, and collections of their ancestral home in 1973. They also established a foundation to manage the museum in the long term, creating a cultural exhibition space with local characteristics.
The museum consists of two buildings: one is a traditional Minnan-style building called "Gufeng Lou," which has a history of 200 years, and the other is a nearly century-old Baroque-style building from the late Renaissance era known as "Yang Lou." The museum's collection contains over 6,000 pieces, primarily consisting of folk artifacts from the mid-Qing period to the early Republic of China period, displaying various aspects of daily life, including food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, entertainment, religious customs, and festive celebrations, fully showcasing the rich cultural heritage.
Gufeng Lou, with its 18th-century brick and wooden structure, presents the traditional Minnan architectural style, revealing the charm of deep courtyards and being an excellent place to appreciate the intricacies of traditional Minnan mansion design.
