Menmaloshan Introduction
Menmaluo Mountain is located at the southernmost end of the Central Mountain Range and features a low-elevation hilly terrain, with its highest peak standing at only 305 meters, resulting in relatively flat and slightly undulating landscapes. The name "Menmaluo" has an interesting origin, as the winding trails of this mountain often confuse hikers, leading locals to humorously refer to it as "Mowulu Mountain." According to this phonetic similarity, the mountain was ultimately named Menmaluo Mountain. Due to its gentle elevation and lack of complex mountain terrains, it is suitable for bicycle tours. Riding through the mountain paths of Menmaluo, the scenery is filled with varying shades of green, creating a rich layered landscape that is anything but monotonous. As one traverses the expansive grasslands, they are met with an open view without the obstruction of dense forests, offering a refreshing sense of joy. Although the mountain scenery appears pristine, it is easily approachable. Once leaving the tall grass areas, the breathtaking vistas come into view. The continuous mountain ranges appear magnificent, and the small villages surrounded by mountains possess a tranquil ambiance. The couple trees nearby evoke a sense of connection with nature, while the ancient Qiongmá Trail, rich in history, brings to mind the former prosperity of Hengchun. There is a touching love story behind the couple trees; it is said that a deeply loving couple, unable to gain approval from their parents for their union, vowed beneath the tree to remain devoted to each other until the end of time. Their sincere love eventually moved the heavens, allowing them to become married. Consequently, it is said in the area that if couples make vows in front of the couple trees, they will successfully marry. Qiongmá, a drought-resistant and poor-soil tolerant fiber plant, serves as the main raw material for making hemp ropes. The hot climate and poor soils of the Hengchun Peninsula perfectly suit the growth conditions for Qiongmá, making it one of the important economic crops known as the "three treasures of Hengchun," which once contributed to the economic prosperity of the region. However, with advancements in rope-making technology, the Qiongmá industry has gradually faced decline. It is quite surprising that a trip to Menmaluo Mountain not only allows one to appreciate natural beauty but also evokes memories of a once thriving history.
