Dragon Head Rock Introduction
The geological formations of Lanyu primarily consist of amphibole-bearing andesite lava and basaltic conglomerates, along with Pleistocene red soil layers, uplifted coral reefs, and Holocene alluvial, colluvial deposits and coastal fringing reefs. Through the natural processes of marine erosion and weathering, these elements have shaped the most fascinating rock landscapes of Lanyu. The formation of Longtou Rock is a large uplifted coral reef that has gradually taken its current shape due to natural marine erosion and weathering. The Tao people (also known as the Yami people) refer to Longtou Rock as ji-mazicing, which means that the rock is sharp and irregular, creating a pocked and jagged rock face. The waters near Longtou Rock are important and rich fishing grounds for the people of Lanyu, where local residents can often be seen fishing and angling.
