Helmet Rock Introduction
Steel Helmet Rock, also known as Hat Rock, is located about 2 kilometers from Yongxing Farm along the coastal highway. It is named for its resemblance to a soldier's steel helmet, and the gap in the rock resembles the brim of a military helmet, standing proudly under the blue sky like a devoted sentinel. This unique and interesting rock formation is a major attraction on the southeastern coastline of Lanyu. According to the legends of the Tao people (Yami people), the giant Steel Helmet Rock was placed by a giant, while another story suggests it is a stone that an ant was unable to lift. The geological composition of Lanyu mainly consists of andesite lava and basaltic conglomerates containing hornblende, along with Pleistocene red soil layers, uplifted coral reefs, and Holocene alluvial and colluvial layers, which have been shaped by natural coastal erosion and weathering to form the most fascinating rock formations on Lanyu. In addition to Steel Helmet Rock, Lanyu is also known for other remarkable rock formations including Red Head Rock, Crocodile Rock, Twin Lions Rock, Dragon Head Rock, Old Man Rock, Hen Rock, Jade Girl Rock, Five-Hole Cave, Tank Rock, Elephant Trunk Rock, Warship Rock, and Bread Rock.
