Dongqing Bay Introduction
Dongqing Bay is located in the eastern part of Lanyu, and it is the largest bay in the entire island. The bay stretches about half a kilometer from the front of Dongqing Village in the north, forming a narrow shape. Generally, when referring to Dongqing Bay, it refers to the natural harbor "Dongqing Harbor," surrounded by rocks, in front of Dongqing Village, where many wooden boats, known as plank boats, are docked. When visitors arrive at Dongqing Bay, they often see several plank boats resting on the shore. As the name suggests, plank boats are made by stitching together pieces of wood rather than being carved from a single large piece. At sunrise, it is common to see people waiting for the sun to rise against the backdrop of the azure harbor and the shore's plank boats, accompanied by the ever-changing colors of the sunrise clouds, making it one of the most iconic scenes in Lanyu. If you wish to capture the sunrise, it is recommended to check the sunrise time on the website of the Central Weather Bureau in advance and arrive at the location 30 to 60 minutes earlier to fully capture the changes in the sky. Plank boats hold significant cultural importance to the Tao people. Therefore, there are traditionally many taboos regarding plank boats, such as women not being allowed to touch the boats and outsiders not being permitted to casually touch or photograph them. Although these taboos have gradually relaxed with the development of tourism, there have been operators in recent years who allow tourists to experience riding on plank boats. Interested tourists can inquire with local operators for experiences but should remember not to touch the boats without permission. More travel considerations for Lanyu.
