Twin Lions Rock Introduction

Lanyu was formed by an underwater volcanic eruption, predominantly composed of andesite lava and basaltic agglomerates. Over the years, erosion and weathering have left behind hard, durable rocks that create various interesting rock formations. Scattered along the coastline are numerous uniquely shaped boulders, which the Han people have named based on their appearances, such as Shuangshi Rock, Battleship Rock, Helmet Rock, Elephant Trunk Rock, Dragon Head Rock, Old Man Rock, Bun Rock, Red Head Rock, Crocodile Rock, Tank Rock, Jade Girl Rock, and Hen Rock, each vividly resembling their namesakes. The incredible forces of nature have sculpted the island's hard rocks as if they were clay, turning Lanyu into an outdoor exhibition of large stone sculptures. Shuangshi Rock is located at the northeast corner, facing the circular highway and overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This natural landscape was formed by the cooling of lava ejected during volcanic activity, resembling a pair of lion cubs, a male and a female, gazing affectionately at each other. Behind the female lion, a small cub peeks out, presenting a warm and harmonious family scene. Viewed from the sea looking towards the land, Shuangshi Rock is bisected, and the Tao people (also known as the Yami people) refer to it as Ji Panatosan, meaning the boundary line between the two tribes of "Dongqing" and "Lang Island." In the hearts of fishing enthusiasts, Shuangshi Rock is not only a natural sculpture but also an extraordinary fishing spot! Looking towards the Pacific from the circular highway, the right side with the small cub is called the "North Lion," while the left side is the "South Lion." Many fishermen prefer the North Lion as a coveted fishing area, with numerous championship winners having achieved great results here! The main catches include groupers, snappers, and other local fish, and the area is common for local indigenous people diving to catch lobsters. Here, one can enjoy the beauty of nature’s creations as well as the fun of fishing. Nearby beaches are covered with sprawling saddle vines, where a vast green sea is dotted with purple flowers, weaving together with the blue sea and sky to create a beautiful picture, enhanced by the sunlight. Approaching the shore, the intertidal coral reef ecosystem is rich, revealing various organisms at low tide, almost like an ideal ecological classroom. When visiting Lanyu, many people make use of bicycles or scooters to travel around the island, enjoying local sights. Well-known attractions like the sunrise at Dongqing Bay, the primeval tropical rainforest scenery of Daitian Lake, and the natural sea-eroded landscape of Lover's Cave are all quite famous and worth a visit.
