Matou Wetland Ecological Park Introduction
The Mataian Wetland Ecological Park is located at the foot of Masi Mountain in Guangfu Township, Hualien, nestled against the Central Mountain Range and surrounded by mountains on three sides. This area is a natural marsh wetland, covering nearly a hundred hectares. "Mataian" or "VATAAN" is the name the local Amis people use to refer to the tree bean, which they consider a good luck charm, carry with them, and plant everywhere. The name Mataian translates to "the place filled with tree beans." Walking along the winding path, you will see a large sign at the entrance of the Xinlv Farm that says "Welcome to Lotus Country." Entering along the wooden walkway reveals a stunning view. In the distance, the mountains are layered, and the clear Fuden Creek meanders through the wetland from south to north, along with endless springs that create a rich and diverse ecological environment, nourishing the vibrant life of this marsh. The park boasts nearly a hundred species of aquatic plants, among which the Taiwan Water Fern, with its small yellow flowers, is a unique species endemic to Taiwan. The variety and number of birds, frogs, damselflies, dragonflies, and aquatic life including fish, shrimp, and shellfish are impressively abundant. In recent years, the Mataian Wetland has also gained fame for its summer landscape of lotus flower fields; during the peak of summer, the lotus leaves stretch across the sky, and the blooming flowers attract many visitors, who can stroll along the wooden pathway to admire the beauty of the lotuses up close.
