Matouan Wetland Ecological Park Introduction

The Mataian Wetland Ecological Park is located at the foot of Masix Mountain in Guangfu Township, Hualien, nestled beside the Central Mountain Range and surrounded by mountains on three sides. This natural marsh wetland spans nearly a hundred hectares. The name "Mataian" (VATAAN) is derived from the Amis people's term for the tree bean, which they regard as a symbol of good fortune, often carrying it with them and spreading its seeds. This area is thus named "the place filled with tree beans." Along the winding paths, a large sign reading "Come to the Lotus Nation" greets visitors at the entrance of the Xinlu Farm. Walking along the wooden boardwalk, the scene that unfolds is breathtaking. In the distance, mountains rise in layers, and the clear Fudu River meanders through the wetland from south to north, complemented by a continuous flow of springs, creating a rich and diverse ecological environment that nurtures the lush life of this marsh. The park is home to nearly a hundred species of aquatic plants, including the Taiwan Water Buttercup, which features small yellow flowers and is endemic to Taiwan. Additionally, the variety and abundance of birds, frogs, damselflies, dragonflies, as well as fish, shrimp, and shellfish in the water, are remarkably plentiful. In recent years, the Mataian Wetland has gained fame for its summer lotus flower fields; during the peak summer season, the lotus leaves stretch across the sky, and the flowers bloom profusely, attracting many visitors who can stroll along the wooden boardwalk to enjoy the beauty of the lotuses up close.
