Dongji Island Lighthouse Introduction
The Dongji Lighthouse was built on a rocky outcrop north of Dongji Island, at an elevation of 47 meters, making it the highest point on the island. It serves as an important navigational marker for ships passing through the Heishui Channel. During the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, there was frequent maritime traffic between Taiwan and Xiamen in Fujian. Based on the navigational experiences of predecessors, ships departing from the mainland heading east needed to visually locate the Hóngshuǐ Channel and Heishui Channel in sequence and navigate past Xiyu and Huayu to safely reach Dongji Island. Numerous maritime disasters occurred in the waters around Wang'an in earlier years, with locations mostly surrounding Dongji Island, which instilled fear among many sailors and fishermen due to the high incidence of shipwrecks. Therefore, the Japanese constructed the lighthouse in the 44th year of the Meiji era (1911) in hopes of improving navigation safety in the area. The original structure of the Dongji Lighthouse was a cylindrical iron tower. However, after its inauguration, the safety of the Heishui Channel remained unimproved. To enhance the lighthouse's protective function, several upgrades and renovations were made over time, allowing it to continue to illuminate and guide passing ships.
