Dongji Island Lighthouse Introduction
The Dongji Lighthouse is built on a sharp reef north of Dongji Island at an elevation of 47 meters, making it the highest point on the island. It serves as an important landmark for ships navigating the Black Water Channel. During the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties, there was frequent maritime traffic between Taiwan and Xiamen in Fujian. Based on previous maritime experiences, ships departing from the mainland and heading east needed to visually locate the Red Water Channel and the Black Water Channel in sequence, passing by Xiyu and Huayu to safely reach Dongji Island. In the early years, many shipwreck incidents occurred around the waters of Wang'an, with locations almost all surrounding Dongji Island. The high frequency of maritime disasters instilled fear in many sailors and fishermen. Therefore, the Japanese built the lighthouse in Meiji 44 (1911) in hopes of improving navigation safety in the local waters. The original lighthouse was a cylindrical iron tower. However, after the lighthouse was lit, the safety of the shipping channel in the Black Water Channel did not see improvements. To strengthen the lighthouse's protective function, it has undergone several equipment changes and renovations, continuing to shine and guide passing vessels.
