Dongji Islet Lighthouse Introduction
Dongji Lighthouse is situated atop a prominent reef in the northern part of Dongji Island, at an elevation of 47 meters, making it the highest point on the island. It serves as an important landmark for ships navigating the Heishui Channel. During the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, there was frequent maritime traffic between Taiwan and Xiamen in Fujian Province. According to the navigational experiences of predecessors, ships departing from the mainland heading east needed to visually locate the Red Waterway and the Black Waterway in sequence, and ensure safe passage by navigating past Xiyu and Huayu to reach Dongji Island. Historical shipwreck incidents in the Wang-an sea area occurred nearly all around Dongji Island, and the high frequency of maritime disasters instilled fear in many sailors and fishermen. Thus, in 1911 (the 44th year of the Meiji era), the Japanese built the lighthouse to improve navigational safety in the local waters. The original structure of Dongji Lighthouse was a circular iron tower, but even after its inauguration, the safety of the Heishui channel did not improve. To enhance the lighthouse’s function, various equipment replacements and renovations were carried out, continuing to provide guidance to passing ships.
