Dongji Lighthouse Introduction
Dongji Lighthouse is built on a reef north of Dongji Island at an elevation of 47 meters, making it the highest point on the island. It serves as an important landmark for ships traversing the Heishui Channel. During the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, there was frequent maritime traffic between Taiwan and Xiamen in Fujian. According to historical navigation experiences, ships departing from the mainland heading east relied on visual navigation to locate the Hongshui Channel and Heishui Channel in sequence, passing by Xiyu and Huayu to safely reach Dongji Island. In the early years, numerous shipwreck incidents occurred in the waters off Wang'an, with locations almost all around Dongji Island. The high frequency of maritime disasters instilled fear in many sailors and fishermen. Therefore, the Japanese constructed the lighthouse in 1911 (Meiji 44) to improve navigation safety in the local waters. The original structure of Dongji Lighthouse was a cylindrical iron tower. However, after the lighthouse was lit, the safety of the shipping route in the Heishui Channel did not see improvement. To enhance the protective function of the lighthouse, it underwent several equipment upgrades and renovations to continue guiding passing ships.
