Dongji Islet Lighthouse Introduction
Dongji Lighthouse is built on a reef north of Dongji Island, standing at a height of 47 meters, making it the highest point on the island. It serves as an important landmark for ships navigating the Black Water Channel. During the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, travel between Taiwan and Xiamen in Fujian was frequent. Based on previous maritime experiences, ships departing from the mainland sailing east needed to rely on visual cues to locate the Red Water Channel and Black Water Channel in sequence, in addition to passing West Islet and Flower Islet to safely reach Dongji Island. Early maritime accidents that occurred in the Wang-an sea area were almost all around Dongji Island, making it a dreaded area for many sailors and fishermen due to the high frequency of maritime incidents. Therefore, the Japanese constructed the lighthouse in 1911 (Meiji 44) in hopes of improving navigation safety in the local waters. The original structure of the Dongji Lighthouse was a cylindrical iron tower. However, after the lighthouse was lit, the safety of the Black Water Channel still did not improve. To enhance the lighthouse's protective function, the equipment has been replaced and renovated multiple times, continuing to shine and guide passing ships.
