Green Turtle Conservation Center Introduction
Next to Tanmen Harbor, there is a streamlined building located in the southeast of Wang-an Island. The center is well-equipped with various facilities and is currently divided into zones: a green sea turtle introduction area, a turtle and human ecology exhibition area, a seabird introduction area, and an introduction to tourism in the South China Sea. At the entrance of the exhibition hall, there is a special stone tablet called "Haoshantang," which records that the local gentry in the Wang-an area previously raised funds to protect sea turtles and plowing oxen. The inscription stipulates that rewards would be given to residents who cherish life, while also punishing violators heavily with the approval of the authorities, demonstrating a balance of grace and authority. Today, this inscription serves as an important witness to the early predecessors' efforts in sea turtle ecological conservation. Inside the center, visitors are treated to the natural ecology of Wang-an, featuring various species such as terns and endangered species. The most important focus is the "green sea turtle," with information provided on the characteristics and distribution of various turtle species, as well as insights on sea turtles and traditional blessings like "Shangyuan Qigu," along with marine ecology and cultural history. The purpose of building this center is to provide facilities and resources for academic institutions to conduct research. The establishment of the "Green Sea Turtle Conservation Center" not only offers a perfect research station for studying the green sea turtle ecology in Penghu's Wang-an but also serves as a local ecological education center. The entire exhibit is designed with an environmental and situational concept, providing an educational space that is both emotional and intellectual.
