Wang-An Flower House (Zhongshe Ancient House) Introduction
Wang-an Flower House, located in Zhongshe Village, Wang-an Township, Penghu, derives its name "Flower House" from its geography, surrounded by hills resembling petals encircling a flower's heart. The ancestors cultivated land and built houses near the "flower center" (located at the top of Shan Zi Wei), thus naming it "Flower House." At one time, it had over a hundred households of Minnan architecture, showcasing its past prosperity. The original name of Zhongshe Ancient House was "Flower House," and at its center stands a small hill, referred to by residents as the "flower heart," meaning the center of the Flower House. The Flower House settlement is one of the better-preserved traditional communities in the Penghu area. Later, when Mr. Chiang Ching-kuo visited, he noted that the Flower House was centrally located in Zhongshe Village and renamed it "Zhongshe" Ancient House. The entire village of Zhongshe is filled with ancient houses from many years ago, exhibiting a unique settlement form known as "one-granary compound." The most famous ancient house is the Zeng family house, which has the character "Zeng" on its windows and is remarkably preserved, holding significant historical and cultural value. In 2003, with the consent of all family members, renovations were carried out according to the original building structure, and a covenant was established to ensure future restorations maintain the original appearance. The red brick window with the character "Zeng" prominently indicates the surname of the property's owner. The front gate adopts the "swallowing the poem" design, with a flat brick pavement typically used for drying fish or peanuts. The front façade is adorned with elegant 5x5 Japanese ceramic tiles, and the building's walls are constructed from basalt rather than the common coral stone seen in most Penghu ancient houses. The front windows feature a scroll-shaped design that evokes literary charm. This location has been listed among the top 100 endangered sites worldwide and is officially registered as a "Preservation Zone for Ancient Houses" by the Cultural Heritage Administration. 【Recommended visit time】 1 hour.
