Dongyuping Introduction
Dongyuping Islet is one of the four main islands of the Southern Four Islands National Park of Penghu, located in Dongping Village, Wang'an Township, Penghu County. It is adjacent to Xiyuping Islet and is the last island formed by volcanic lava in Penghu, approximately 8 million years ago. Positioned to the southeast of Wang'an Islet, the two islands are around 10 nautical miles apart, and their waters are rich in coral with a high coverage rate and diverse marine ecology. The land has areas that have not been overly developed, preserving traditional Penghu houses and agricultural structures made from basalt and coral reef stone, as well as buildings from the prosperous period. The island is divided into northern and southern elongated segments, surrounded mostly by steep sea cliffs. The northern coast features several winding rock formations, while the southern coast has extensive stretches of sandy beaches and a small beach on the western coast. The settlements are mainly located in depressions to the west and southwest; there are vast agricultural terraces and structures along the slopes of the northern and southern segments, creating a unique cultural landscape. Currently, the number of residents is small, and the main industries are tourism and fishing. Tourists can appreciate attractions such as Tazi, Lulian Island, Frog Rock, the settlements on Dongyuping Islet, terraced fields, and the basalt column landscape. Tazi is a massive rock at the port that resembles the statue of Guan Gong, composed almost entirely of exposed basalt, which has been eroded by seawater and weathering, giving the surrounding stones a yellowish color. Lulian Island, visible from the southern coast and locally known as "Sizijiao," has one side featuring a broad wave-cut platform covered with various intertidal organisms. Frog Rock is made up of basalt clusters resembling a crouching frog. The settlements on Dongyuping Islet are distributed across the southern, central, and northern regions, with most houses being traditional Minnan-style architecture, situated along the hillside in a reverse direction to shelter from the wind. In the middle of the northern and southern landblocks of Dongyuping Islet, spectacular terraced fields and agricultural structures can be seen as remnants of former agricultural practices, providing evidence of past farming activities while avoiding the strong northeast monsoon. The basalt column landscape includes various geological features such as wave-cut grooves, sea stacks, and sea caves that can be observed in the mountainous area. Centered around Jilong Tower, there is a wave-cut arch on the left side; looking toward the sea, one can see the wave-cut groove terrain, while on the right side, there are two types of columns and slabs formed by different cooling times of volcanic eruptions, with volcanic breccia layers below. The resources on each island within the Southern Four Islands National Park are limited, so visitors are encouraged to cherish these resources and take their trash off the island to avoid increasing the burden on the island. (Note: "Southern Four Islands of Penghu" includes Dongyuping Islet, Xiyuping Islet, Dongji Islet, and Xiji Islet, as well as their surrounding reefs.) (Note 2: "Cai Zhai" is a building structure made of basalt or stone walls on all four sides, designed to withstand strong winds, allowing crops to grow successfully.) [Suggested Stay Duration] 4 hours or overnight.
