Dongyuping Introduction
Dongyu Pingyu is one of the four main islands of the Southern Four Islands National Park in Penghu. It is located in the Dongping Village of Wang-an Township, Penghu County, adjacent to Xiyu Pingyu. Dongyu Pingyu is the last island formed by Penghu's volcanic lava, approximately 8 million years ago. It is situated to the southeast of Wang-an Island, about 10 nautical miles apart, with its waters boasting a high coverage of corals and a rich, diverse marine ecosystem, along with undeveloped terrestrial areas that preserve traditional Penghu structures made of basalt and coral rock, as well as colonial-style buildings from its prosperous past. The island is elongated in a north-south direction, surrounded mostly by steep cliffs. The northern coast features several winding rock formations, while the southern coast has extensive sandy beaches, and there's also a small beach on the western coast. Settlements are mainly concentrated in low-lying areas in the western and southwestern parts. The slopes of the northern and southern land blocks contain vast vegetable farms and terraced fields, creating a unique cultural landscape. Currently, there are not many residents, and the main industries are tourism and fishing. Visitors can enjoy attractions such as Tazi, Lian Island, Frog Rock, the Dongyu Pingyu settlement, terraced fields, vegetable farms, and the basalt column landscape. Tazi is a large rock at the harbor that resembles a statue of Guan Yu and is mostly bare basalt, long subjected to erosion from seawater and weathering, resulting in surrounding rocks appearing yellowish-brown. Lian Island, visible from the southern coast, is known locally as "Sizijiao" and features a broad wave-cut platform populated with various intertidal organisms. Frog Rock consists of basalt conglomerate rock formations that resemble a crouching frog. The Dongyu Pingyu settlement is distributed in the southern, central, and northern regions of the island, with most houses being traditional Min-style architecture built along hillsides to shield from the wind. Between the two land blocks of Dongyu Pingyu, terraced fields and vegetable farm ruins are visible, showcasing the best evidence of past agricultural practices that avoided the strong northeast monsoon. The basalt column landscape features various geological formations, including wave-cut gullies, sea stacks, and sea caves, with the Golden Dragon Pagoda at the center, accompanied by a sea arch to the left, looking out to a wave-cut gully, and on the right, columns and plates formed due to varying cooling times of erupting magma, under which lie volcanic breccia layers. Due to limited resources on the islands within the Southern Four Islands National Park, visitors are encouraged to cherish the resources and take their trash away from the island to minimize environmental impact. Note 1: The Southern Four Islands of Penghu include Dongyu Pingyu, Xiyu Pingyu, Dongji Island, and Xiji Island, along with surrounding islets associated with Wang-an Township. Note 2: Vegetable farms are buildings constructed from basalt or pebbles on all sides, designed to withstand strong winds and allow crops to grow successfully. [Recommended stay time] 4 hours or overnight.
