Magong Jin Gui Tou Cultural Park Introduction
The Jin Gi Tou Fort was built by General Wu Hongluo and, along with the West Islet West Fort and the West Islet East Fort, is one of the most powerful forts on Penghu. It has experienced Japanese occupation and the Qing and French Wars. After World War II, it was garrisoned by the Nationalist Army. The original cannons lost their defensive capabilities and were decommissioned in the 1940s. The base was then occupied by the Army's Penghu Defense Command's Tiannan Camp, where an underground passage was built on the southern side of the fort, allowing access to the coast below the southern cliff. Later, the military handed over this site to the Penghu County Government, and it was announced as a national historic site on November 21, 2001, and is now open for visits. The Jin Gi Tou Fort is equipped with one each of 7, 10, and 12-inch Armstrong breech-loading cannons. The fort's structure is similar to that of the West Islet West Fort, West Islet East Fort, and North Fort at Dacheng, all featuring a brick and stone rammed earth vaulted design. The surrounding earthworks, fortifications, fort base, and entrance gate of the Jin Gi Tou Fort are well-preserved. Upon arrival, visitors can see the entrance gate inscribed with "Heavenly South Key," penned by General Wu Hongluo. The camp area can be distinguished into sections including the gun platform, outer walls, tunnel, official quarters, soldier barracks, and horse paths, forming a castle-like structure that integrates combat, training, and living spaces. The barracks in the area are partitioned into various sizes, now serving as exhibition spaces. Due to the presence of the Nationalist Army's communication battalion at the time, the level of wear and tear on the historic site has been reduced, preserving its external appearance. The site features various military figures and cannon models, along with a historical battle display project in the underground tunnels of the Jin Gi Tou Fort, revitalizing the historic site for reuse. Jin Gi Tou Fort has become a new cultural tourism highlight in Penghu. Here, visitors can not only experience the atmosphere of past battlefields but also combine the visit with nearby attractions such as Guanyin Pavilion and Duxing Ten Villages to plan a cultural tour of Magong. 【Recommended visit duration】 2.5 hours.
