Tsai Ting-lan Scholar's Residence Introduction
The Cheng-Chih House (Cai Jinshi Di) is located in the upper village of Xingrenli, southeast of Magong City, Penghu. It was built by the Jinshi Cai Tinglan, the first and only Jinshi in Penghu, after passing the imperial examination. Constructed from the 26th year of the Daoguang Emperor's reign (1846) until now, Cai Tinglan was born in the 6th year of the Jiaqing Emperor's reign (1801). At the age of thirteen, he began his studies and subsequently excelled in various examinations, becoming a student in Penghu County's official school. A diligent and studious individual, he lectured at the Chongwen Academy, Yinxin Academy, and Wenshi Academy. In the autumn of the 17th year of the Daoguang Emperor's reign (1837), he passed the provincial examination and in the spring of the 24th year (1844), he passed the metropolitan examination, becoming a Jinshi and appointed as a county magistrate in Jiangxi Province. His career continued on the mainland, eventually being promoted to the position of Tongzhi. He died of illness while in office in the 9th year of the Xianfeng Emperor's reign (1859). Three years after becoming a Jinshi, in the 26th year of the Daoguang Emperor's reign (1846), he returned to his hometown to pay homage to his ancestors and built the Jinshi residence to honor his achievements. The architectural features of the residence include a porch that is 4.5 meters wide and 3.3 meters deep, with a recessed façade. The side rooms employ a horseback style of construction, with the roof featuring a hard mountain hip roof, distinguished by its unique swallowtail design among Penghu's residential buildings. Other architectural styles and decorations within the residence are also quite exquisite. In 2013, after five years and an investment of over ten million NTD for restoration, the Cai Tinglan Jinshi Di, a designated historic site in Penghu County with a history of 167 years, officially opened for public visits. 【Recommended visiting time】 1 hour
