Shifen Old Street Introduction
Shifen, located in the Pingxi District of New Taipei City, is renowned for being one of the earliest developed and largest settlements in the area. A railway branch line known as the "Pingxi Line," built for coal mining, winds along the Keelung River valley and links several charming old streets, including Shifen, Pingxi, and Jiufen, after being shaped by the rapid decline of coal mining. A key feature here is the connection between the old streets and the railway tracks, allowing visitors to experience the unique feeling of "passing by the train door" and the fun of walking alongside the tracks. It is also a popular filming location for many movies and idol dramas. Although coal mining has ceased, storefronts along the old streets remain bustling with visitors enjoying food and sky lantern handicrafts. This has become a must-visit attraction for international tourists in Taiwan. Shops offer "Shifen Happiness" postcards and souvenirs, and visitors can choose different colors of sky lanterns to write down their wishes with brush pens. During the sky lantern release process, the shop staff assist with poses and photography, allowing you to experience the release of lanterns filled with blessings against the backdrop of an enchanting town atmosphere.
