Shifen Old Street Introduction
Shifen, located in the Pingxi District of New Taipei City, is famed for being the earliest developed and largest settlement in the area. The Shifen branch railway, constructed for coal mining, winds along the Keelung River valley, connecting several old streets rich in character, such as Shifen, Pingxi, and Jingtong, after years of decline in mining activities. A notable feature here is the connection between the old streets and the railway tracks, offering a unique experience of "passing in front of the train," as well as the fun of strolling alongside the tracks. This area has become a popular filming location for many movies and dramas. Although coal mining has ceased, the food stalls and sky lantern craft shops on the old street remain bustling with tourists, making it a must-visit spot for international visitors to Taiwan. Visitors can choose different colors of sky lanterns to write down their wishes with a brush, and during the lantern release process, shopkeepers provide guidance on posing and help with photography!
