Pengyuan (Taiyang Hospital) Introduction
Peng Garden is a Japanese-style building that was originally the second club of the Taiwan Yang Company during the Japanese colonial period. It features entertainment facilities such as a martial arts hall, billiards, and table tennis rooms, and it also served as a training center for the company's mining technical personnel. After World War II, it was repurposed into a hospital affiliated with the Taiwan Yang Company at the Ruifang Gold Mine. Following the cessation of mining in Jiufen, it became Peng Surgical Hospital. After the death of Dr. Peng Qinghuo, it was renamed Peng Garden in his memory. As you descend from Shuqi Road towards the main road, on your left, you can see a small square with stone tables and chairs. Behind the square stands a well-preserved two-story Japanese building, which is quite famous locally as "Peng Garden." Dr. Peng practiced medicine in Jiufen for his entire life, saving many lives; at that time, many miners were infected with silicosis from inhaling excessive dust, and Dr. Peng particularly researched the disease, saving countless affected miners. The interior is filled with information and historical photographs related to Dr. Peng. Currently, appointments are not accepted, but visitors can appreciate the view of the exterior at the square in front of Peng Garden.
