Yue Mei Tourist Sugar Factory Introduction
The Yue Mei Sugar Factory, located in the Houli District of Taichung City, showcases Taiwan's sugar industry heritage in a tourist-friendly setting. Originally known as the "Dajia Sugar Refinery," it was established in 1909 by the Japan Sugar Company. In 1919, the Taiwanese Sugar Corporation took over production at the Yue Mei Sugar Factory, which not only earned Taiwan substantial foreign exchange but also became one of the key contributors to the economic miracle through sugar production. With the passage of time, Taiwan's sugar industry underwent transformation and ended its sugar production business in 1999. The old sugar factory reinvented itself as an educational and recreational tourist attraction. The park features an area to exhibit Taiwan Sugar products, interpretive zones for the sugar-making process, and has created a kid-friendly interactive space with water trails and koi ponds. Visitors can start their journey at the Wufen Station, an important historical point for sugar transport, followed by a guided tour of the century-old sugar factory to gain an in-depth understanding of traditional sugar-making techniques. Finally, don’t forget to enjoy a nostalgic ice pop from the sugar factory, savoring the cool and sweet taste, marking an unforgettable end to this delightful trip.
