Yue Mei Sugar Factory was founded in 1909 and is located on Jiahou Road in the Houli District of Taichung City. Visitors can enter through the old steam locomotive and enjoy a nostalgic atmosphere; they can also taste the traditional shaved ice, evoking sweet childhood memories. The sugar factory now adopts a diversified management approach, with the workers' welfare association from the Japanese colonial period being the most popular among tourists. Opposite the welfare association, there is a tourist area featuring a fountain pool and a small white bridge, with murals depicting the scenery of the Old Mountain Line on the walls. After crossing the small bridge, there is a covered corridor showcasing ancient farming tools and items used in everyday life from before, creating a feeling of stepping into a time tunnel. On the other side is the exhibition and sales center, offering a wide range of Taiwan Sugar products. In addition to its ice products, Yue Mei Tourist Sugar Factory also provides guided tours explaining the "Hundred-Year Tourist Sugar Factory." The factory is rich in vegetation, with ancient trees towering above, including a thousand-year-old Zecai tree, the only thousand-year-old ginkgo in the plains, as well as a hundred-year-old orange tree and a hundred-year-old pine tree pathway.

Yue Mei Sugar Factory Introduction

Located in the Houli District of Taichung City, the Yue Mei Sugar Factory welcomes visitors to explore the glorious past of Taiwan's sugar industry. Originally named "Dajia Sugar Refinery," it was established in 1909 by the Japanese under the Taiwan Sugar Company. In 1919, it was taken over by the Taiwan Sugar Corporation and became a key player in generating substantial foreign exchange for Taiwan, contributing to the economic miracle of the sugar industry. Over time, due to various external impacts, Taiwan's sugar industry ceased its sugar production operations in 1999. Adapting to the changing times, the old sugar factory transformed into a tourist attraction, featuring areas for exhibits of Taiwan Sugar products and explanations of the sugar-making process. The park also offers a koi fish pond with a hydrophilic walkway, providing a space for family interactions. Visitors can first explore the former five-minute sugar transportation station, followed by a guided tour of the century-old factory to learn about the sugar-making process. Finally, be sure to try a traditional flavor ice pop from the sugar factory, indulging in its sweet and refreshing taste to conclude your visit with an unforgettable experience.
