National Museum of Natural Science Botanical Garden Introduction
The National Museum of Natural Science features several plant-related exhibition research areas, including an herb garden, eight outdoor display areas in the botanical garden, and a tropical rainforest greenhouse. The outdoor exhibition area of traditional Chinese medicine, located in the Human Culture Hall (formerly the Chinese Science Hall), showcases over a hundred living medicinal plants. Each herb displayed in the garden is accompanied by an explanatory sign introducing its scientific name and therapeutic effects. The botanical garden, covering approximately 4.9 hectares, focuses on the unique ecosystems of low-altitude Taiwan and tropical rainforests as its exhibition theme. It carefully selects and examines representative ecological zones in Taiwan, highlighting the interesting features of the landscape. There are a total of eight ecological areas: the uplifted coral reef ecological zone, Lanyu ecological zone, coastal forest ecological zone, Taitung cycad ecological zone, northern low-altitude ecological zone, central low-altitude ecological zone, southern low-altitude ecological zone, and monsoon rainforest ecological zone. Various native species such as trees, shrubs, herbs, and ferns are planted, with over 800 species in total across the entire garden (including the greenhouse). The tropical rainforest greenhouse is a unique glass structure resembling a pagoda with a traditional Chinese architectural style, standing approximately 40 meters tall. Inside, it exhibits plants for both utility and ornamental purposes, simulating the environmental characteristics of tropical rainforests, such as super tall trees, riverbank rainforests, rainforest floor, and lowland tropical rainforests, with around 400 different plant species. The botanical garden occupies about 4.5 hectares, showcasing the unique ecosystems of low-altitude Taiwan and tropical rainforests. It carefully selects and examines representative ecological zones in Taiwan to highlight the interesting features of the landscape, which includes the same eight ecological areas found in the larger botanical garden, with over 800 species of plants across the entire area (including the greenhouse).
