Yuzhenying Shrine (Former Xinhua Public Elementary School) Introduction
The Yuzhenying Memorial Hall is a very unique attraction in Tainan, located in a corner of Xinhua Elementary School. From here, one can see a reflection of the colonial education during the Japanese rule. The term Yuzhenying refers to the portraits of the Emperor and Empress of Japan, while Memorial Hall signifies a place of worship. Its purpose was to allow students to see the images of the Emperor and Empress daily during morning assemblies. The principal would take out and read the education edicts from the Memorial Hall, constantly instilling the concepts of the Emperor system and national identity in the colonized people at that time.
