Mituo Temple Introduction
Mi Tuo Temple, founded during the Yongli period of the Ming dynasty (1647–1661), is one of the four major temples in Tainan. Initially established on a small scale and known as Mi Tuo Hall, it was later expanded and renamed Mi Tuo Temple, becoming one of the seven temples and eight shrines in the city. In 1858, local merchants and devotees pooled their resources to donate a large bell. The temple was destroyed during World War II air raids, and the bell was nearly confiscated by the Japanese military to be melted down for weapon production. Fortunately, the war ended before this could occur, and the bell was later purchased by an antiquities dealer and returned to Mi Tuo Temple.
