Ruins of the East Gate of Tainan City Wall Introduction
The remaining walls located between Dadong and Xiaodongmen on Guanghua Street are believed to have been built in the 53rd year of the Qianlong era (1788), based on their structure and appearance. During the Qing Dynasty, the Zhu Yigui incident occurred in Taiwan, which led to the approval for the construction of the Bamboo Fort in Muzha in the 11th year of the Yongzheng era (1733). In the 53rd year of the Qianlong era (1788), after the Lin Shuangwen incident, the fort was transformed from a bamboo structure to an earthen fortification to strengthen the city's defenses. The walls became increasingly fortified and grander in scale, laying the foundation for future expansions. After experiencing the Battle of Zhang Bing in the 12th year of the Daoguang era (1833), the outer city was expanded, and it wasn't until the 44th year of the Meiji era (1911) that the Tainan city area renovation plan was implemented, leading to the gradual demolition of the city walls.
