Huang's Kitchen Introduction
Shanlin is the second highest area for the Hakka population in Kaohsiung. Located in the Huang's Family Kitchen of Yuemei Village, it has a history of over a hundred years, witnessing the process of Hakka ancestors settling and cultivating Shanlin. The entrance's arch bears the phrase "Filial Piety and Friendship," while the back is inscribed with "Five Classics, World Class," signifying the meaning of passing down family values through filial piety. This fully demonstrates the Huang family's adherence to their ancestors' teachings, encouraging descendants to be friendly to others, respect their elders, and study diligently. The decorative fans on the arch come from the story of Huang Xiang, who "fanned his mother’s pillow to keep her warm," found in the Twenty-four Filial Exemplars, making this arch the best-preserved example in the Hakka region. The ancient three-section courtyard is well-maintained and retains a unique feng shui layout known as "crab holes," making it a rare modern historic site. Entering from the triangular intersection from Meinong into Shanlin, the small road on the right leads to the starting point of Highway 113-1. From there, following the water channel and turning right leads directly to the century-old mango tree landmark in front of Huang's Family Kitchen and the constantly flowing Half Moon Pond. The front hall, "Jiangxia Hall," contains ancestral tablets of the Huang family, as well as facilities and buildings like a laundry area, ancient well, and god worship altar.
