Huang's Family Kitchen Introduction
Shanlin is the second highest area in Kaohsiung for the Hakka population, located in the Huang family's kitchen in Yuemei Village, with a history of over a hundred years. It witnesses the process of Hakka ancestors pioneering in Shanlin. The entrance archway features the phrase "Filial Piety and Brotherhood" on its main beam, while the back is inscribed with "Five Classics, Worldly Prestige," symbolizing the importance of passing down filial piety and family values. This fully reflects the Huang family's adherence to ancestral teachings, encouraging descendants to be friendly to others, filial to elders, and diligent in learning. The decorative fan on the archway comes from the story of Huang Xiang "Fanning the Pillow and Warming the Quilt" from the Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars, making it the most well-preserved archway in Hakka areas. The ancient three-sided courtyard is well-maintained and possesses a distinctive feng shui pattern resembling crab holes, making it a rare modern heritage site. Entering Shanlin from the triangular intersection coming from Meinong, the small road on the right leads to the starting point of Highway 113-1. From there, following the water channel to the right, you will reach the century-old mango tree landmark in front of the Huang family's kitchen and the continuously flowing Half-Moon Pool. The front hall, "Jiangxia Hall," houses the ancestral tablets of the Huang family's ancestors, along with facilities and buildings such as a laundry area, an ancient well, and a Bogo shrine.
