Huang's House Introduction
Shanlin is the area with the second highest proportion of Hakka population in Kaohsiung. Located in the Huang Family House of Yuemei Village, it has a history of over a hundred years, witnessing the process of Hakka ancestors entering and cultivating Shanlin. The archway at the entrance has the inscription "Filial Piety and Brotherhood" on the top beam, and "The Fifth Classic Family" on the back, symbolizing the importance of passing down filial piety within the family. This reflects the Huang family's adherence to the teachings of their ancestors, encouraging future generations to be friendly to others, respect their elders, and diligently pursue education. The decorative fan on the archway is inspired by the story of Huang Xiang from the Twenty-four Filial Examples, who "fanned his pillow to warm his quilt." This archway is the most well-preserved in the Hakka region. The traditional three-section courtyard is well-maintained and features a unique feng shui layout of crab holes, making it a rare modern historical site. From the triangular intersection entering Shanlin from Meinong, the small road on the right leads to the starting point of Highway 113-1. From there, following the water canal, one can reach the century-old mango tree landmark and the continuously springing Half-Moon Pond in front of the Huang Family House. The front hall, "Jiangxia Hall," houses ancestral tablets of the Huang family’s ancestors, along with facilities and structures such as a laundry area, old well, and Da Bo Gong shrine.
