Batongguan Old Trail - Wannian Hengqu Stele Introduction
The Batong Ancient Trail holds a significant chapter in Lugu Township. In 1875, Qing Dynasty general Wu Guangliang constructed a trail approximately 125 kilometers long, crossing the Central Mountain Range and leading to the East Mountain Trail, known as the Batongguan Ancient Trail. The starting point is at Linqipu (now Zhuoshui Township, Nantou County), passing through Fenghuang Mountain and Dongpu in Lugu Township, and traversing Xiuguluan Mountain to Pushi Pavilion (now Yuli Township, Hualien County). Most of the path of the ancient trail in Lugu Township has been damaged. On a large rock at the foot of Fenghuang Mountain, the inscription "Wannian Hengqu" is carved, with a border measuring 150 centimeters high and approximately 123 centimeters wide. The calligraphy is robust and majestic, and the four characters "Wannian Hengqu" imply the road facilitates convenient travel and commerce, benefiting generations indefinitely. It has been designated as a national historic site.
