Batongguan Ancient Trail - Wankeng Historical Site Introduction
The Batong Ancient Road occupies an important page in the history of Lugu Township. In 1875, the Qing dynasty general Wu Guangliang constructed a road with a total length of approximately 125 kilometers, crossing the Central Mountain Range and leading to the back mountains, known as the Batongguan Ancient Road. The starting point is Linqipu (now Zhu Shan Township, Nantou County), passing through Mount Fenghuang in Lugu Township and Dongpu, and crossing Xiu Gu Luan Mountain to Pushi Pavilion (now Yuli, Hualien County). Most of the ancient road in Lugu Township has been damaged. On a large rock at the foot of Mount Fenghuang, there is an inscription reading "Wan Nian Heng Qu," with a frame height of 150 cm and a width of about 123 cm. The calligraphy is vigorous and powerful; the four characters "Wan Nian Heng Qu" signify the convenience of trade and travel along the road, benefiting generations endlessly. It has been designated as a national historic site.
