228 Peace Memorial Park Introduction
The 228 Peace Memorial Park is located within the boundaries formed by Gongyuan Road, Xiangyang Road, Huaining Street, and Ketagalan Boulevard in Taipei City. It is a classical-style urban park featuring a Japanese garden pond, arched bridges, green pathways, and an open-air music stage. The Taipei 228 Memorial Museum and a commemorative monument are also situated within the park. In 1995, former President Lee Teng-hui represented the government in apologizing to the families of the victims at the 228 Memorial Monument. In the same year, former Taipei Mayor Chen Shui-bian renamed "Taipei New Park" to "228 Peace Memorial Park," hoping to offer solace to the families of the victims and encouraging future generations to learn from historical lessons and strive together for the future of Taiwan and its people. In 1997, during the 50th anniversary of the 228 Incident, the unveiling ceremony for the inscription of the "228 Incident Memorial Monument" was completed. The "Taipei 228 Memorial Museum" was also established to present exhibitions detailing the events and the history of the victims. Only by recognizing history and uncovering the facts can one seek happiness for themselves and future generations, ultimately achieving true peace.
