Peace Park (228 Memorial Park) Introduction
228 Peace Memorial Park is located within the block surrounded by Gongyuan Road, Xiangyang Road, Huaining Street, and Ketagalan Boulevard in Taipei City. This classical-style urban park features a Japanese garden-style pond, arched bridges, green pathways, and an open-air music stage. The Taipei 228 Memorial Museum and a memorial monument are also situated within the park. In 1995, former President Lee Teng-hui represented the government in apologizing to the families of the victims at the 228 monument. In the same year, former Taipei City Mayor Chen Shui-bian renamed "Taipei New Park" to "228 Peace Memorial Park," hoping to comfort the grieving families and encouraging future generations to learn from history and strive for the future and well-being of Taiwan. In 1997, during the 50th anniversary of the 228 Incident, the inscription ceremony for the "228 Incident Memorial Monument" was completed. Concurrently, the "Taipei 228 Memorial Museum" was established to publicly exhibit the history and suffering related to the incident. Only by recognizing history and discovering the truth can we pursue happiness for ourselves and future generations, ultimately achieving true peace.
