228 Peace Memorial Park Introduction

228 Peace Memorial Park is located within the block formed by Gongguan Road, Xiangyang Road, Huaining Street, and Ketagalan Boulevard in Taipei City. It is a classical-style urban park featuring a Japanese garden landscape pond, arch bridge, green walking paths, and an open-air music stage. The Taipei 228 Memorial Museum and memorial are also situated within the park. In 1995, former President Lee Teng-hui apologized to the families of the victims in front of the 228 Memorial. In the same year, former Taipei Mayor Chen Shui-bian renamed "Taipei New Park" to "228 Peace Memorial Park" in hopes of comforting the families of the victims and encouraging future generations to learn from history and work together for the future of Taiwan and its people. In 1997, during the 50th anniversary of the 228 Incident, a ceremony was held to unveil the inscription of the "228 Incident Monument." At that time, the Taipei 228 Memorial Museum was also established to publicly exhibit the history and facts of the incident. Only by recognizing history and uncovering the truth can one pursue happiness for themselves and future generations, thus achieving true peace.
