228 Peace Memorial Park Introduction
228 Peace Memorial Park is located within the block bound by Gongguan Road, Xiangyang Road, Huaining Street, and Ketagalan Boulevard in Taipei City. This classical-style urban park features a Japanese garden with scenic ponds, arched bridges, green walking paths, and an open-air music stage. The Taipei 228 Memorial Museum and a memorial monument are also situated within the park. In 1995, former President Lee Teng-hui represented the government and apologized to the families of the victims at the 228 Monument. That same year, former Taipei Mayor Chen Shui-bian renamed "Taipei New Park" to "228 Peace Memorial Park," hoping to comfort the families of the victims and encourage future generations to learn from historical lessons and strive for Taiwan's future and its people. In 1997, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 228 Incident, the "228 Incident Memorial Monument Inscription" was completed and unveiled. The Taipei 228 Memorial Museum was also established, showcasing exhibitions that publicize the timeline of events and the history of the victims. Only by recognizing history and uncovering the facts can one pursue true peace for oneself and future generations.
