228 Peace Memorial Park Introduction
228 Peace Park is located within the block formed by Gongyuan Road, Xiangyang Road, Huaining Street, and Ketagalan Boulevard in Taipei City. This classical-style urban park features a Japanese garden with landscaped ponds, arch bridges, green pathways, and an outdoor music platform. The Taipei 228 Memorial Museum and the memorial monument are also situated within the park. In 1995, former President Lee Teng-hui represented the government in apologizing to the families of the victims at the 228 memorial monument. In the same year, former Taipei Mayor Chen Shui-bian renamed "Taipei New Park" to "228 Peace Park" in hopes of comforting the families of the victims and encouraging future generations to learn from history to strive for the future and well-being of Taiwan. In 1997, during the 50th anniversary of the 228 Incident, the inscription ceremony for the "228 Incident Memorial Monument" was completed. The "Taipei 228 Memorial Museum" was also established to exhibit the events and the historical truth of the tragedy to the public. Only by recognizing history and discovering the facts can one pursue happiness for oneself and future generations, thus achieving true peace.
