228 Peace Memorial Park Introduction
The 228 Memorial Peace Park is located within the urban block formed by Gongyuan Road, Xiangyang Road, Huaining Street, and Ketagalan Boulevard in Taipei City. It is a classical-style urban park that features Japanese garden landscaping, ponds, arch bridges, green pathways, and an outdoor music stage. The Taipei 228 Memorial Museum and the memorial monument are also situated within the park. In 1995, former President Lee represented the government in apologizing to the families of victims at the 228 Memorial Monument. The same year, former Taipei Mayor Chen Shui-bian renamed the "Taipei New Park" to "228 Memorial Peace Park" with the hope of comforting the families of the victims and encouraging future generations to learn from historical lessons, working together for the future and well-being of Taiwan. In 1997, during the 50th anniversary of the 228 Incident, the unveiling ceremony for the "Inscription of the 228 Incident Memorial Monument" took place. At the same time, the "Taipei 228 Memorial Museum" was established to exhibit the history of the incident and the suffering endured, making it known to the public. Only by recognizing history and uncovering the facts can one pursue happiness for oneself and future generations, leading to true peace.
