228 Peace Memorial Park Introduction

228 Peace Park is located within the boundaries formed by Gongguan Road, Xiangyang Road, Huaning Street, and Ketagalan Boulevard in Taipei City. This classical-style urban park features a Japanese garden-style pond, arch bridges, green pathways, and an outdoor music stage. The Taipei 228 Memorial Museum and monument are also established within the park. In 1995, former President Lee Teng-hui represented the government in apologizing to the victims' families in front of the 228 Memorial. During the same year, former Taipei Mayor Chen Shui-bian renamed "Taipei New Park" to "228 Peace Park," hoping to comfort the families of the victims and that future generations can learn from history and work together for the future of Taiwan and its people. In 1997, on the 50th anniversary of the February 28 Incident, the unveiling ceremony for the "228 Incident Monument Inscription" was completed. At the same time, the "Taipei 228 Memorial Museum" was established to publicly exhibit the events and the historical facts of the victimization. Only by understanding history and recognizing the facts can we pursue happiness for ourselves and future generations and obtain true peace.
