228 Peace Memorial Park Introduction

228 Peace Memorial Park is located within the block formed by Gongyuan Road, Xiangyang Road, Huaining Street, and Ketagalan Boulevard in Taipei City. It is a classical-style urban park featuring Japanese garden-style ponds, arch bridges, green pathways, and an outdoor music stage. The Taipei 228 Memorial Museum and the memorial monument are also situated within the park. In 1995, former President Lee Teng-hui represented the government and apologized to the families of the victims at the 228 memorial monument. In the same year, former Taipei City Mayor Chen Shui-bian renamed "Taipei New Park" to "228 Peace Memorial Park," hoping to comfort the families of the victims and encouraging future generations to learn from history and strive for the future and the people of Taiwan. In 1997, during the 50th anniversary of the 228 Incident, the inauguration ceremony for the inscription of the "228 Incident Memorial Monument" was completed. The "Taipei 228 Memorial Museum" was also established to publicly exhibit the events and historical facts of the incident. Only by recognizing history and discovering the truth can one pursue happiness for themselves and future generations, thereby obtaining true peace.
