Beitou Branch, Taipei Public Library Introduction
The Beitou Branch of the Taipei Public Library is Taiwan's first green building library, located within the lush, ecologically rich Beitou Park, adjacent to the Beitou Hot Spring Museum. The library has one basement level and two above-ground floors, covering a total area of 650 ping. With the fragrance of books indoors and the chirping of birds outdoors, reading becomes a delightful and enjoyable activity. The library's collection exceeds ten thousand volumes and features "ecological conservation" as its unique characteristic, making it a treasure trove of knowledge that feels like a paradise for book lovers. The indoor reading area has meticulously designed tables and chairs that resonate with the architecture; outdoors, there are wooden deck chairs and reading platforms, allowing visitors to read while feeling the gentle breeze and immersing themselves in the world of books amidst nature. When it’s time to take a break, stepping outside offers a view of the lush forest and an ecological lotus pond, which not only soothes tired eyes but also relaxes the body and mind. The roof features a lightweight green roof with solar photovoltaic panels that can generate 16 kilowatts of electricity and incorporates large balcony overhangs and vertical wooden screens to reduce heat radiation entering the indoor areas, achieving energy-saving effects. The green roof and sloping grass designs help with moisture retention and naturally drain rainwater into collection tanks, which is then reused for watering plants and flushing toilets, promoting greening and reducing water resource waste. The building uses wood and steel, with all materials being recyclable to minimize environmental waste. Regarding indoor health and environmental indicators, measures have been taken against termites for the wood construction, and ecological paints have been used while unnecessary renovations have been avoided to reduce pollution and the release of toxic substances, thereby protecting human health. When visiting Beitou, in addition to enjoying the hot springs, one can also relish in the fusion of book fragrance and greenery in a forest bath!
