Beitou Branch, Taipei Public Library Introduction

The Beitou Branch of the Taipei Public Library is Taiwan's first green building library, located within the lush, ecologically rich Beitou Park, adjacent to the Beitou Hot Springs Museum. The library features one underground level and two above-ground levels, covering a total area of 650 ping (approximately 2,150 square meters). The indoor ambiance is filled with the fragrance of books, while the outdoor area is alive with the sounds of birds, creating a delightful environment where reading becomes an enjoyable activity. With a collection of over ten thousand volumes, the library emphasizes "ecological conservation" as its thematic focus, offering a treasure trove of knowledge that makes book lovers feel as if they have entered a paradise of literature. The indoor reading area is thoughtfully designed with furniture that complements the architecture; the outdoor space features wooden boardwalks and reading platforms, allowing visitors to enjoy a refreshing breeze while immersed in their reading experience. When one needs to take a break, stepping outside to gaze at the expansive greenery of the forest and the ecological lotus pond not only alleviates visual fatigue but also provides relaxation for both body and mind. The roof is designed as a lightweight ecological roof fitted with solar panels that generate 16 kilowatts of electricity, while deep overhangs and vertical wooden screens reduce heat radiation entering the building, thus lowering energy consumption for enhanced efficiency. The green roof and sloped grassy areas are designed to retain moisture, directing water naturally to rainwater collection tanks for reuse in watering plants and flushing toilets, promoting biodiversity and reducing water waste. The building utilizes recyclable wood and steel, minimizing waste and environmental impact. In terms of indoor health and environmental indicators, the wood materials are treated for termite prevention, and ecological paints are used while avoiding unnecessary decoration work to reduce pollution and the release of toxic substances, preserving human health. Visitors to Beitou can enjoy not only hot springs but also a forest bath merging the fragrance of books with vibrant greenery!
