Hengshan Terraces Introduction
Hengshan Terraces are located in the midstream of Dakeng Creek and are a famous terraced landscape in Sanzi. Departing from the Sanzi urban area toward Hengshan, a scene of pastoral beauty unfolds with fields arranged along the mountain contours. The intersection of roads and rivers creates layers upon layers of terrain, forming a stunning landscape resembling geometric patterns. Whether it’s the desolate beauty during fallow periods or the lush green scenery during the season of growing Chinese water bamboo, travelers can appreciate the changing beauty of the terraces throughout the seasons. Hengshan, formerly known as Hengshan Keng, is a hilly area with significant elevation differences. In the early days, Sanzi, being close to the mountains and the sea, had limited flatland. To cultivate more rice, ancestors developed terraced fields along the terrain, resulting in today's renowned terraced landscape of Sanzi. Though rice is no longer cultivated in Hengshan Terraces, it has become the hometown of Chinese water bamboo. The harvest season for Sanzi water bamboo is from September to November, making it an ideal time for travelers to visit Hengshan Terraces. Besides enjoying the swaying fields of Chinese water bamboo in the autumn breeze, visitors can also experience bamboo harvesting and taste dishes featuring the unique flavors of water bamboo, enjoying the pleasures of rural tourism.
