Pingtung City Introduction
Pingtung City is the capital of Pingtung County, formerly known as "Ahou," which was originally the site of the Pingpu people's Ahou tribe. During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, Han people established settlements here, and by the Qianlong period, markets appeared, referred to as "Ahou Street." During the Japanese colonial period, feeling that the term "Ahou" was inappropriate, the name was changed to "Ahou Hall." In 1920, due to local administrative changes, the Japanese renamed it "Pingtung" because it is located to the east of Banping Mountain. In 1933, it was upgraded to Pingtung City. Following administrative adjustments in 1950, Pingtung City changed from a province-controlled city to a county-controlled city. Pingtung City, located in the northwestern part of Pingtung County, borders Jiuru Township to the north, Changzhi Township and Linluo Township to the east, faces Kaohsiung City's Daliao District and Dashu District across the Gaoping River to the west, and connects with Wandan Township to the south. It lies within the Pingtung Plain, characterized by flat terrain and rich resources, with a tropical monsoon climate and an average annual temperature of about 24°C, making it warm and comfortable. Pingtung City is a relaxing and vibrant place, featuring meandering streams, historic sites, and military dependents' village architecture, merging to create a unique urban character that warmly welcomes everyone like sunlight!
