Pingtung City Introduction
Pingtung City is the capital of Pingtung County, formerly known as "Ah-Khau," which was originally the site of the Pingpu tribe's Ah-Khau community. During the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty, Han people began establishing villages here, and a market known as "Ah-Khau Street" appeared during the Qianlong period. During the Japanese occupation, due to the perceived unsuitability of the name "Ah-Khau," it was renamed "Ah-Kau Hall." In 1920, following local administrative reforms in Taiwan, the Japanese renamed it "Pingtung," because it is located east of Banping Mountain. It was officially upgraded to Pingtung City in 1933. In 1950, after an administrative reorganization, Pingtung City changed from a provincial city to a county-administered city. Located to the northwest of Pingtung County, Pingtung City borders Jiuru Township to the north, Changzhi Township and Linluo Township to the east, and faces Kaohsiung City's Daliao District and Dashu District across the Gaoping River to the west, with Wan-Dan Township to the south. It is part of the Pingtung Plain, characterized by flat terrain and rich resources, enjoying a tropical monsoon climate with an average annual temperature of about 24°C, warm and comfortable, making it quite pleasant. Pingtung City is a place for relaxation and a vibrant lifestyle, featuring babbling streams, historical monuments, and military villages that blend into a unique urban characteristic, warmly welcoming everyone with sunny enthusiasm!
