Changhua County National Defense Education Attraction Introduction

The 1895 Bagua Mountain Anti-Japanese Memorial Hall has a poignant history intertwined with blood and tears. On August 1, 1894, the Qing government and the Japanese government officially went to war over issues concerning Korea. According to statistics, the Qing government mobilized 600,000 troops, while Japan sent 240,000 soldiers. The two nations engaged in a globally significant land and naval battle along the Yalu River and in the Yellow Sea of China. Due to outdated equipment and insufficient training, the Qing army's once-proud Beiyang Fleet and its 35 infantry regiments were rendered ineffective from the start of combat, suffering heavy casualties in what is known as the First Sino-Japanese War.

When the people of Taiwan, three thousand kilometers away, learned that they had been sacrificed by China, they were filled with indignation and could not accept the Qing Dynasty government's view that "Taiwan, though important, is lighter than the capital." After continuous protests and petitions, the Taiwanese gradually recognized the reality and decided to resist on their own. "The people of Taiwan should unite to resist. We are willing to die in battle and lose Taiwan, but we will never simply hand it over," proclaimed the Taiwanese, unwilling to be ruled by a foreign power. They decided to gather their strength and, after May 29, 1895, began their resistance journey from north to south, regardless of age. This historical period was adapted into a film...
